Just laughing at all the people who claimed that this wasn’t always about the American government stealing the innovations and possessions of other countries.
A majority foreign(non-Chinese) owned firm (inc US investors & major political donors) controlling TikTok is unacceptable while a 50% US Govt OWNED entity is perfectly fine
The hypocrisy is palpable
Using taxpayer $$$ to payback Jeff Yass (ByteDance investor) for being GOP MegaDonor. Endless grift
Yeah great idea, let Trump and Musk run wild with it. Let the US government do everything they're accusing China of doing. The first state-run media platform. What could go wrong?
Let TikTok rest in peace as a happy memory alongside Vine and MySpace. We don’t need its shambling corpse propped up as some kind of Trump-controlled propaganda machine.
Most of the people that voted for Trump don't even comprehend how to use the internet, let alone TikTok. This is starting to sound like a Tech and multimedia grab by the Trump admin. And this is just the beginning of the propaganda machine.
I thought state owned social media apps were a communist thing that only China and North Korea did, and that the liberal democratic USA would never do.
He doesn't understand the real problem. China's laws and practices basically ensure the Chinese government has full access to the algorithm so when they launch propaganda operations to interfere with US affairs it has maximum effect essentially weaponizing the platform against unsuspecting users.
Who is their right mind would trust an algorithm controlled by trump? It's bad enough to have one controlled by China, but somehow, all these ideas coming out about 50% trump govt control are better? It's dead, Jim.
I know, ridiculous since healthcare is much more important to people's lives and keeps them alive but there are very few things the US government owns that can be used for comparison.
Why would I not understand that governments change hands at elections? And this government wants us to not change hands. This government wants to stay in power. So no I don’t trust Medicare with the talk show grifting fake doctor running it.
Medicare is a service that is provided to those who don’t have insurance. Or who can’t afford it. And I do believe in single pair insurance. But the government should not control media or social networks. That’s not the people, that’s the government. And right now our government is an oligarchy.
No. It's not the same at all. One can and would be used as a propaganda machine for his own purposes. The other, not that. You can pick which you think is which.
The point is "Donald Trump" is not an argument against public ownership because the alternative even in your scenario is the propaganda be done by unaccountable capital owners, not a government where we have a vote.
Anyone from 15-25 doesn’t give a fuck as long as they can use it that’s all that matters. Full blown panic mode and protests took place mainly by 20 somethings and the app was only shut down for 17 hours…
Perplexity is a really bootleg AI compared to say...Deepseek. If openAI is yahoo, Perplexity is Infoseek or Alta Vista some other forgotten relic. Did I just make Infoseek up? Probably
The censorship has already started on TT. I have been mysteriously "unfollowed" by political content creators and got community violations for my comments and never had issues before. Others have complained about being unfollowed now.
“But the technology needs to be disconnected from China," he added. "It needs to be disconnected from ByteDance. There's absolutely no way that China would ever let us have something like that in China."
Well, first thing the US Govt will do is mess w/the algorithm (one of the things that makes TikTok unique)& then all the users will notice a change & leave to find something else. Maybe YouTube benefits? Because people are not going back to FB, Threads is a nothing-burger & IG is in decline.
Perplexity AI will NEVER possess what an individual citizen owns -- good conscience. No one should be impressed or influenced by this kind of machine advice.
Government-owned TikTok will produce algorithm manipulation, censorship, & legal liability in the name of the people.
An UNDEMOCRATIC notion.

State-owned media is typical in AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES.
Why the double standard?

Ah, MAGA, such a fun ideology.
Because nothing attracts a user base like "US government-approved."
Just kill it already if you're going to poison it like that.
🤔🤔🤔
Me: So we should outlaw the technology?
Trump: No. If we own it, then it's totally cool.
Nationalization is good, we need more public ownership of the economy.

So China is our North Star for freedom of speech?
