TikTok is banned in China. US banning TikTok is not about national security, but they need to say that to counter the free speech argument. It's about killing the competition.
Ive found that some of the American tiktokers i follow, that their content comes across rude and disrespectful on Red. Just my opinion. I just want to see calligraphy and cooking with soothing music
This is typical American/western sh*t though. Everybody goes bumrushing an existing space to "build community" with no thought of how it's going to impact the community that's already there. "We can learn more about the culture!" Very touristy.
I think it is very much about censorship and wanting to block outside influence from the west, which is why I thought going to RedNote as a form of protest for the US blocking tiktok didn't make sense in the first place
These young people aren't built like we are. They refuse to learn lessons that we were already talked from as young as I can remember. They never look at the big picture, They never vote for harm reduction. They want what they want now and it's always detached to some purity test.
The Chinese name is Little Red Book, which is a literally a book of Chairman Maoβs quotes and speeches. If TikTok was spying what you think that app is gonna do?
Chinese Government said you will not be infecting our population with Western ideas. Now, China & Russia are doing a good job infecting American conservatives
& Republican GOP politicians w/ideas against Democracy. But China wonβt allow the same infection through the cute little app named Red Note.
No, it's the chinese government's fault. There is no TikTok in China, because China wants to control what its citizens see. Now that RedNote is seeing a surge in foreign users, the chinese government is getting scared and is going to the same they did with TikTok: separate chinese and foreign users.
A bunch of Black people were talking all that shit about free speech and turned into gentrifiers. Now they're learning some hard lessons about China and what China really thinks of them. π€·πΎββοΈ
She updated with the ccp decision not to do that and to encourage communication btw. I think they realized Americans seeing daily life in china is doing more than propaganda could to change perception right now. Weβll see how long it lasts.
They've been doing visa free for some countries for a bit now and have expanded it. Foreigners travel and do their own YouTube experience videos. Saves them money explaining. This will probably be managed as an extension.
I just knew that culture was even more conservative than ours. I already hated the way TikTok made us talk around issues. I knew that wasnβt gonna be a space for me. Iβm way too Black and way too queer for that.
Iβm not surprised. Xi doesnβt even let them watch Winnie the Pooh because of a small joke someone made a decade ago. No way he is going to let them interact with Americans all willy nilly. Thatβs way too much access. Also lol at people being upset at this.
On xhs though most commenters i see engaging with foreigners say this is fake news meant to keep us separated, and they ask people to stay.. what do folks think of this? Here's a couple examples of responses to dispute so called rumour
This underscores the importance social media has for connecting people, whether authentic or not. Whatever the future may bring, we we have to advocate for innovation that gives people some measure of control over their choices of how they engage with others.
There are PLENTY of choices available to people. They just don't all look & feel the same. They also aren't non-profit services. Tech costs money, even open-source platforms.
To be clear, I wasnβt defending the move. I was reacting to this womanβs experience and grief and using it to illustrate the importance of moving forward in a thoughtful fashion. How we operate today has got to change.
When you have 1.3B people and 1B poor, you cannot have outside influence. China lives by Strong Control. "Cultural exchange" is cute, until they say it is not.
That's not mutually exclusive to China or Russia, Red Scare & Cointelpro are a few examples of the US being ready to attack it's own ppl if they get radical thoughts of equality & equity. Every country works in its own best interests, ppl just hate the US more & are using Rednote out of spite
I agree with everything you've said. I lived in China for 5 years. Loved it. Have great friends there. But Xi came in and the entire tone shifted. My thing is, what are we doing here to change here? Saying, "well America does..." is not encouraging change. It frustrates me.
tbh the US shouldnt exist, even if it collapses I believe it would be a net positive for the world. The powers that be would rather cede power to oligarchs & fascists than try to disrupt the status quo that would benefit most Americans at the cost of profit. We're cooked & I'm lookn abroad to move
America has no culture (other than hate and what was stolen), which is not uncommon as she is a spoiled teenager to the rest of the world. That's why the wealthy are interested in space. No new places to take. I've lived in four countries, excluding America. Power is ugly everywhere.
Well from what I saw US nail art ppl or technicians who've joined are probably never ever leaving. I'm not one but I was gasping with all of them at the creations. Otherworldly.
That makes sense. Creative people have always been able to cross barriers, to share beauty and pain through expression. In their own way that is political. I encourage that. More of that please.
They don't have guns. Knives and even swords are common weapons. To be fair, that's also common in the UK. I don't hate China or its people. I just think people should be aware of cultural differences before they start talking a lot of bunk.
I feel her pain but the call is coming from inside the house. There were several Chinese American people that were posting videos about how to migrate to RedNote and how this was gonna show those old geezers in Congress. Gatekeeping is not always a bad thing, ask Black people.
Damn, this is an awful outcome. We really didn't think this one through (shocking, for Americans, I know). Deleted my account. I loved the sharing of cultures that I saw but certainly don't want to cause harm.
As soon as I saw that I immediately canceled my account. The people on that app were so welcoming as well but I don't want to be responsible for making their experience lesser or worse.
I think a lot of people aren't hearing you because they don't want to. It's too uncomfortable to recognize that we can be colonizers if we choose to engage in colonizing activity, especially if it's to be trendy
whew, ask South Africans about skyrocketing rental and property prices because westerners find them cheap in areas theyβd never afford in their home countries. locals are being priced out in CT and Jhb is probably next π¬.
Ya we tend to do that in many places smh, while working remote job that don't even contribute to the local economy. All the while being destructive to foreign ecosystems. It's embarrassing to say the very least

"I don't understand what happened"
My GenX ass saw this coming but I assume that was my life experience kicking in.

Yes I know some ppl get around chinese controls, but most don't.
I think transit visas are different.
I'd prefer having individual states choose terms that they want to be identified as, and leaving it at that.
I'm not American I was just curious.
I often deliberately look for non English speaking DIY you tube videos to expand perspective.
I wish people were smarter than this.
I play Overwatch. China has its own servers for that game too.
Well had. They were shut down in early 2023. They are coming back tho. But those users still can't play on the other servers without a VPN.
They still want your data, though, which is why they're not banning foreign IPs.
