Every time I hear someone ask why a daytime exercise show is the most popular show in The Substance universe or how The Substance works as a business or how Sue was able to make a hidden room in her house in a few days or other questions my mind just goes to
I see it as little different than wondering if Dan and Castiel or John and Sherlock have deeper feelings for each other. You are thinking about and engaging with the media and characters outside of what is shown
?
Wait i thought they introduced an episode of the man responsible for makin the batmobile? Wouldnt that mean hed be the one that pumps the tires? Or atleast showed bruce how to?
Smart alecks aside, i get what this quote means, just unfortunately a few of those questions have been answered.
Batman has a mute engineer named Harold that does maintenance for him. Harold builds things for Batman, and has both saved the day or turned against him. I don't know of that was true when that quote came out, but asking the question has enriched the stories
Yeah, I get what Morrison is saying, but also, there are two different levels of question going on there.
Stuff like the Batmobile question is often nitpicky - questions you can answer yourself through inference and real world knowledge. Nothing prevents Bruce or Alfred from pumping the tires.
Superman's flight, however, is a different issue. People don't fly normally. We have no basis for inference. People like to predict things, and feel good when they get it right. Knowing the mechanics of superman's flight enables them to make those predictions. Thats why they ask how he flies.
Knowing mechanics also lets you play with it. Superman's flight is powered by the sun. What happens if we block out the sun or give him a different sun, do different radiations affect him differently?
People who say it's weird that a daytime exercise show is the most popular show in the substance universe forget that in our real world the most popular show in America for like a decade was a singing competition.
I only asked that first question because it just seemed like an odd pick, like "damn didn't know the exercise video industry was so cutthroat" but of course it's there because it does what the movie needs it to do
This is why I have never asked how the village in The Acolyte, carved of stone, caught on fire, a huge stone fire. Everyone died. I never ask about it. It's fiction guys!
I do think about it. Constantly. Keeps me up some nights. Just a thought that persists in my head that I keep entirely to myself
I'll admit I was a bit confused cause it seemed like The Substance brand wasn't getting any money which if it's a commentary on the Beauty Industry exploiting people for profit is kinda weird, but I guess that the Substance Guy is just a weird eugenist or something
This movie low-key traumatised me the first time I watched it because, to quote a letterboxd review "This is what conservatives think happens when you take HRT."
I've had this half-baked thought that horror usually can easily set up the most mindbending scenarios but for Reasons never has access to the budget to really go all-out
I was dead certain it was gonna cut to credits the first time the star of the last act was shown in the mirror.

"Same place as the music"
