Brexit never made sense for anyone who wanted economic prosperity for UK citizens. It was fueled by bigotry and the suffering of people under Tory rule (include the long-lasting impact of Thatcherism) who blamed the wrong people.
@jonathanfreedland.bsky.social odd to have to tag you into your own posted article but still ...
Is there any sign that the Labour backbenches are getting organised on this topic? You'd assume the urban ones are getting twitchy about a) the issue and b) the threat from GN/LDs
TLDR: Jonathan Freedland’s Guardian column warns a second Trump presidency endangers Britain, citing risks to European security and the UK economy. He argues Brexit leaves Britain vulnerable to U.S. protectionism and calls for closer EU ties, urging Labour to rethink its Brexit stance. #ai
Brexit was about sovereignty, not aligning with global leaders. Britain’s future depends on its own vision, not Trump’s. Rejoining the EU isn’t about logic—it’s about values and priorities. The real question: What does Britain stand for now?
It should never have gone to a vote. Even when it did, the vote wasn’t binding until the Cons decided to make it so. There were people researching what they’d voted for after they voted, like Trump supporters. The future of a nation should never be based on emotions.
Nobody in the 🇬🇧 politics has the balls to admit it and especially to do something about it. There is no going back. Brits have to carry on regardless.
Yeps, look at the psychology of the man. He will do what Erdogan did to Turkey, because he's deluded enough to think he knows the best. This time Americans dearly deserve the shit that is about to hit their fans. There is no curing stupid.
Right. At best, yeah.
The tariffs, closed border, the money spent chasing and caging people, the fact that there will be no agrobusiness if he actually does cage people (maybe he'll just depress migrants wages further pushing them even more into poverty)
Forbes in 2012 on a GA immigration crackdown "To forgo a repeat of last year, when labor shortages triggered an estimated $140 million in agricultural losses, as crops rotted in the fields, officials in Georgia are now dispatching prisoners to the state’s farms to help harvest fruit and vegetables."
I do not believe they will allow us to rejoin until and unless there is a consensus of voters in favour. Right now Reform, Conservative and the Right wing press remain pro-Brexit. Have you asked them? I suspect not.
Sorry, I was unclear there. I do not believe the EU will have us back unless they are convinced we won't change our minds again. They might accept some special status that will benefit the EU, but no more.
I think they’d fall over themselves to have us back. We have a huge economy which they want to benefit from and we’d be a perfect example of the insanity of leaving.
Agree, Ireland had I think 2 referenda before voting to join. I can only imagine that Europe, now under existential threat l, see the sense in readmitting a nuclear power. I do take the point that there will have to be another referendum though before hand.
There was so much ignorance about what being an EU member actually gave the UK. The day-to-day workings of the EU institutions was never covered by the UK press - and yes I included you @theguardian.com in that. The UK elected MEPs were a travesty and hijacked by the grifter Farage. We lost so much.
I agree with Brexit not making sense and would love to rejoin the EU, but Dumpy does not dominate the world ffs, thinking that way is what got us here MEDIA
At what point is this going to be accepted. Brexit does not work in the context that we're in with global politics. Let's normalize pro-eu views again.

Nothing makes sense these days.
unless, this is you kissing the ring before he takes office (again).
Would the EU let GB back in even if they wanted back?

That it came out of the blue sweeping the UK via far right wing fascist propaganda was as giant a red flag as MAGA’s similar rise in the US.
None of it was organic, both were Russian active measures to destabilize the West and weaken NATO before invading Ukraine.
Work out your issues outside the EU, and then talk about coming back.
BTW this is the way accession works for everyone.

never did, never will.
