Hello folks! I like the weather, and coding, and helping to connect people & ideas. I LOVE my family. (sunset image above: Seaford in Sussex, taken looking towards the entrance to Newhaven. Photo from Chris Plumley https://bsky.app/profile/crp.bsky.soci)

“Hurry!” said Frog. “We will run and catch it.” “No!” shouted Toad. “I cannot do that.” “Why not?” asked Frog. “Because,” wailed Toad, “running after my list in not one of the things that I wrote on my list of things to do!”

Starmer: "You are very, very welcome here in Downing Street. As you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom. We will stand with you and Ukraine for as long as it may take." Proud to be British tonight. #SlavaUkrainii 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

What a lovely time capsule from 1965 :)

#Cyclone #Zelia is currently undergoing EXTREME rapid intensification with an eye appearing in just mere hours and now proceeding to clear. With 32C+ waters we are about to witness the upper echelon of cyclonic storms on earth

Great work! Getting more and more out of the AI based weather models.

New feature for AI models (GraphCast & AIFS) on PolarWx - using the available pressure levels, these maps show the **estimated** potential precipitation type: polarwx.com/models/?mode...

Exceptional rainfall in parts of North Queensland, Australia. Most flooding, as of today (Feb 3), is in rural areas but more rainfall in the forecast. The town of Cardwell (between Townsville and Cairns) has recorded 1.36 m (53.50 in) of rain since Jan 27. Another example of a stalled coastal low.

Here's a striking visualization of sea level rise that I just made for Key West FL, which has a 112-year history. The colors indicate the number of hours each day that the water level was above the mean high tide (1983-2001 mean). I show five months of the year, centered on "King Tide season". 🌊

This is a really big deal - 50 degrees above normal!

true life: i can't stop watching Frasier

I know many folks have an interest in the use of AI weather models, and below is a FANTASTIC opportunity for students out there to get ALL the bells and whistles.

#Rays RHP Taj Bradley provided an eerie look inside Tropicana Field on Instagram today

At buoy M6 about 200 miles west of Ireland, the pressure bottomed out at 944 mb this evening, and winds peaked at sustained 68 mph, gusting to 98 mph, at about 8:30 pm EST. Ireland buoy data here: www.marine.ie/site-area/da...

Update on Storm #Eowyn in Ireland. 700k+ w/out power. New wind record set for Ireland. 100mph winds in UK. Widespread damage. www.accuweather.com/en/severe-we...

Max wave height at the M3 buoy on the SW coast of Ireland from #StormEowyn is up to 65’ (20m) and still rising. Significant wave height is 40’ (12m). The coast is getting a significant battering!

The jet stream that helped dump a foot of snow on the Gulf Coast is now accelerating over the Atlantic, helping fuel the strongest storm on record over Ireland with 100 mph gusts and 50 ft waves! It is so strong NOAA sent a hurricane hunter to Ireland to collect data!

Sea surface temperatures in the northwest Gulf of Mexico have dropped by over 3°C in the last 7 days thanks to their recent cold snap. #TXwx #LAwx #weather

Oh just your average 140 mph wind gust (max over ocean) 938 mb storm, clocking Ireland Friday morning. It may end up being an all-time min low pressure record for that area.

An extremely dangerous and potentially record-breaking bomb cyclone is just hours away from severely impacting Ireland, especially, and the northern parts of the UK. Storm Éowyn will unfortunately reach its peak intensity right at landfall with wind gusts possibly exceeding 200 km/h (124 mph).

Goodness - some VERY strong winds for the Emerald Isle on Thursday.

Egad! A deep low pressure for the British Isles later this week...

After getting sheared for some time, #Sean is getting its act together with curling convective bursts. Will have another day to strengthen before hitting cooler waters

SST charts are running again for 2025! Moving forward, both 2023 and 2024 values get their own colors for context. As of January 15, all but one region are above their 1991-2020 average value. Also, the Caribbean Sea is warmer than it was this time last year. kouya.has.arizona.edu/tropics/SSTm...

Though I sense the incoming President will try to undo this, the ERA did indeed get the approval of 3/4 of the states (when Virginia approved it), so... worth a shot.

I am processing this. A recent report from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) essentially predicts the end of our society in 50 years if we continue to not stop climate change. Possible total global GDP cut in half, a loss of human life of 4 billion. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In one of many excellent presentations in the 34th Conference on Education, Elinor Martin reported that minorities - about 30% of the US population - are about 30% of the students in 2-year programs, but 10% or less of the students in Bachelor's and Grad School #AMS2025

Tony McNally of @ecmwf.bsky.social - They may not be used in the future in all the same ways as they are now, but physics-based models are the only tool we have for understanding our planet. #AMS2025

Sharing the report that @drshepherd2013.bsky.social discussed earlier at the #ams2025 Presidential Forum. A must read for Gulf Coast emergency managers. www.nationalacademies.org/our-work/com...
