Yep, go back in time far enough and having seizures was called entering a shamanic trance. Medicine evolves and as we learn more, new conditions are discovered and then get named.
I wondered for a little “why trains?” But given the options available(and socially allowable) 30+ years ago, miniature worlds you build to your liking make total sense. You get collecting, building, problem solving, puzzle solving etc
I visited CarRail; paradise w rows of classic cars + an indoor village of rooms full of RR memorabilia and shelves of complete Lionel trains on display.
Kughn erred by auctioning it all off; he’d have done better to have donated it to Ford museum.
I watch videos of people playing train driving sim games (to learn about the trains and routes) and have had model layouts in the past when I had more room.
Not sure how to say this in a way that doesn't sound like Captain Obvious to the progressives and "WOKE" to the MAGAs but you DID You just didn't know what it was so you grouped it into "Retar! ed" and didn't even try!

I’m not sure I understand the question. If you’re asking what tells me he’s autistic — I could definitely write down a list but you’d have to buy me dinner first.
Incredible and wonderful.
My husband set up some trains one Christmas ( def not in your league!).
We had a New Years eve party.
All the men were gathered round the trains!
Because families with children who suffered from severe developmental delays often put their child in an institutional home. Reagan closed the institutions, forcing the school system to pick up the slack and provide special education programs that were inclusive. They became part of the community
I keep wondering why the public doesn't understand that they are making public school teachers and aides provide medical treatment and rehab to children who need intensive interventions from the medical community. Insurance companies do not want to pay.
As a retired special education teacher who specialized in the EDBD group of kiddos (emotional/behavioral) I get this. Our severest cases went to therapeutic school, but only after we exhausted all other avenues to keep them in the general population. Sometimes it worked, but sometimes it did not.
As one also who began working in adult mental health facilities and worked with transitioning teens to adult programs - What we do in school is bandaid-ing and isn't working for most of these children because we are there to educate and get them to pass a test not to heal the condition.
And some of those conditions were never going to be “healed”. Institutions had their huge drawbacks, including no regulations or oversight. But inclusion is an imperfect solution as well.
Closing institutions was throwing the baby out with the bath water. There aren't enough community agencies/funds to support everyone. Families don't have the time or resources. Sweeping reform would have been a better model. The Kennedys had the money but many ended up on the streets.
When people say this to me, I immediately think of no fewer than five people I knew as a child who were born before WWI who most definitely were autistic.
lol this rings so loud as my grandfather was a crazy train person who would def be classified as autistic if tested. Bro built all the parts custom and made kits no one else had. Insane shit. His whole life’s work was those trains. Sad because he dismissed the family but it was our fault of course.😂
William Shakespeare, Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Charles Darwin, Hans Christian Andersen, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Isaac Newton...definitely autistic, and many lived before ANY vaccines had been created. 🤷♀️ Neurodiversity is a strength!
And the iambic pentameter Shakespeare used to write! Before I hit autistic burnout, rhyming couplets used to come to me ALL THE TIME, and they were almost always in iambic pentameter. 🤷♀️
Also, all the photos of model kit boxes "to be done" that have all the variations of each kit and hundreds of kits lining a huge wall of purpose built shelves for the "not made yet" kits collected since they were 10 and will be dead before done.
My dad was also an obsessive metal detector. Thank God he had an insatiable memory for names. He knew the names of everyone who worked in his institution, and their spouses, and he greeted everyone by name. He was well loved for his kindness.
AUTISM existed, kids were locked up in institutions without comprehensive care:
They had beatings to render them blind, electroshocks, their throats burned with acid to keep them from screaming 😱, bones broken all through their lives*

I clearly recall my mom, now 90, commenting how no one wanted their kid diagnosed autistic because it was blamed on a cold, unloving mother.

Just like Pluto wasn't discovered until 1930, but I'm pretty sure it was there all along.
Descriptions of Caligula's (3rd Roman Emporer) speech and literalism are aligned with Autistic traits.
Alexander the Great likely had both Autism and bipolar disorder.
This has always been a thing.
But yeah - right; Autism never existed in my day.
