We are at the mercy of a bunch of lazy, careless buffoons!🀯🀯🀯
The EU have a trade surplus in goods but a deficit in services... but because they only based it on goods, it looks like it's an asymmetric relationship.
Perhaps that was the intention, but the EU need to fight back on services... Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and X (the tech bros) & financial services.
The guys that came up with this formula are way to stupid to have that intention.
πŸ‘
Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.

Hanlon's razor.
It's pure lunacy.
It's hilarious too.
Just shows how ridiculous capitalism is.
This is how I pictured Trump calculating the tariffs… so I guess their actual approach is slightly better.

Intrigued to know what the tariff number for Russia would be using those calculations
47% apparently
41 sorry
But Scott Bessent said America has zero trade with Russia and Belarus.
Friends like Russia don't suffer tariffs though

Those Vietnamese and Laotian garment workers are just going to have to buy more i-phones
Could use xl
And took their guidance from Grok !
Goodness me.

So many PhD theses, all blooming at once. At least we may see one positive unintended consequence from this absolute shitshow.

Economics courses in UK academia may be our most lucrative/only UK export in the future. Those still running, of course…
so it's simply punishment for having been more successful at selling your goods to americans than they are at selling theirs to you

(arguable who actually suffers the punishment)
Less gobsmacking than how many β€œserious” analyses were published after the announcement, before we’d figured out how the already clearly insane tariffs were calculated.
How does that work with some of the islands that he's tariffed that aren't even populated then?
He set a minimum base rate of 10% for all territories
I think that you missed the point. These Trump Tariffs look like they've been drafted on the back of a Big Mac box, and are being enacted just as sloppily.
I don't disagree, but there *is* a method, even if that method is stupid. Countries that the US has a deficit with use the formula. All other countries get 10% (with a few exceptions such as Russia because there's at least one way in which Trump is tiresomely predictable)
And you still aren't getting the point... The entire method is ridiculously bizarre & even "The Mooch" is saying that it's not even logical what they did. Cramer's going to be on Erin Burnett's show in about 10 minutes on CNN & it will be "They Know Nothing" drama. 😏

Where did I say it isn't ridiculously bizarre?
Entirely in-line with "lets have fun with anyone who tries to be reasonable". Knee-jerk game playing. Same as "owning the libs".
This tariff calculation method is another nail in the coffin of the opinion, that they understand economics but are ideologues and just don't care. They do not understand basic concepts.
If the purpose is to make everyone grovel to him for exemptions then it doesn’t matter how they work it out.
Everyone is missing the point. It isn't how the tariffs were calculated or why the figures are batshit, its what the effect will be. This is the Project 2025 playbook, which is being closely adhered to by Trump.

Trump's economics team make Homer Simpson look qualified to work at a nuclear plant.
is it though? Have you been following what these people are up to and their level of intelligence? πŸ˜‰
Just go to the pub Jim - lovely day for it.
"It's a wonder that they still know how to breathe."

- Bob Dylan.
It does look as if the tariff structure is based on Internet domain rather than national border...

Well it should be
But it’s Trump- an historic moron, enabled by the worst of cowards
I'd been thinking of Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" as the most accurate prediction of our political trajectory - but not even Mel's off-the-wall caricatures President Skroob and Dark Helmet can compare to the utter stupidity of this regime.
The economics of the primary school playground.
What’s really gob-smacking is that the formula is produced by a chatbot, and that the US Treasury report looks suspiciously bot-written too.
Seems incredibly likely. This lot genuinely seem to think that AI is the answer to everything
I think AI used in govt should be subject to FOI. As regulations catch up, LLMs & image generators should be made to keep a database of all their output so it's possible to see when work is original.
Yes a 100%. I got a chatgpt response to a whistle blowing complaint to the Education Department recently, telling me the serious issue I was raising didn't affect enough people for action to be taken.
That's not going to happen while politicians ask chatbots what regulations to set.
