The EU have a trade surplus in goods but a deficit in services... but because they only based it on goods, it looks like it's an asymmetric relationship.
Perhaps that was the intention, but the EU need to fight back on services... Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and X (the tech bros) & financial services.
Less gobsmacking than how many βseriousβ analyses were published after the announcement, before weβd figured out how the already clearly insane tariffs were calculated.
I think that you missed the point. These Trump Tariffs look like they've been drafted on the back of a Big Mac box, and are being enacted just as sloppily.
I don't disagree, but there *is* a method, even if that method is stupid. Countries that the US has a deficit with use the formula. All other countries get 10% (with a few exceptions such as Russia because there's at least one way in which Trump is tiresomely predictable)
And you still aren't getting the point... The entire method is ridiculously bizarre & even "The Mooch" is saying that it's not even logical what they did. Cramer's going to be on Erin Burnett's show in about 10 minutes on CNN & it will be "They Know Nothing" drama. π https://youtu.be/TaKnDMv6ceg?si=H2Dk3DKJzM7HIvxs
This tariff calculation method is another nail in the coffin of the opinion, that they understand economics but are ideologues and just don't care. They do not understand basic concepts.
Everyone is missing the point. It isn't how the tariffs were calculated or why the figures are batshit, its what the effect will be. This is the Project 2025 playbook, which is being closely adhered to by Trump.
I'd been thinking of Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" as the most accurate prediction of our political trajectory - but not even Mel's off-the-wall caricatures President Skroob and Dark Helmet can compare to the utter stupidity of this regime.
I think AI used in govt should be subject to FOI. As regulations catch up, LLMs & image generators should be made to keep a database of all their output so it's possible to see when work is original.
Yes a 100%. I got a chatgpt response to a whistle blowing complaint to the Education Department recently, telling me the serious issue I was raising didn't affect enough people for action to be taken.

Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.
Hanlon's razor.
It's hilarious too.
Just shows how ridiculous capitalism is.

ART DAVID ROWE
So many PhD theses, all blooming at once. At least we may see one positive unintended consequence from this absolute shitshow.
Economics courses in UK academia may be our most lucrative/only UK export in the future. Those still running, of courseβ¦
