Amplitude modulation as a variable seems aligned with other research I've found. Might explain the popularity of "8D" mixes (a modulation technique where stems are panned intermittently creating constant movement within the track).

I've read two books on the subject. I believe that I suffered this as a child. It's usually mother to son and when you're a boy no one wants to believe that your mother is abusing you. Everyone gaslights you when you reach out to adults for help. I'm not surprised that it's a new one on you.
