I'm plainly biased, but I'm willing to assert that academia is one of the last viable seawalls for truth and democracy. And since academia is currently being destroyed by calculating populist politicians and an apathetic public, I'm not sure even that claim will hold up in 5 or 10 years. 3/3

In fairness, the person of the year award is often misunderstood. The selection criteria is "for better or for worse ... has done the most to influence the events of the year"

They have awarded Putin, Hitler, Nixon and Stalin in the past. So it's not inconsistent or new to select Trump.

History tells us what to expect, but it is still alarming just how easily the fourth estate gave up any semblance of being a check on authority. That old idea needs to be shed and we need to view the MSM primarily through the lens of corporatism and profiteering. The enabling then makes sense.
