He wants positive change and to change Selvig's violent manner of doing things. He is mocked by pretty much all of his coworkers for this and is toeing the line; his lumon shelf is breaking. I'm guessing all the psychospiritual shit in the woods was demanded to keep the program "lumon".

While a lot of it is clearly carrot (family room, hall pass) I think he believes in kindness beyond just getting cold harbour done. How can you work with someone and not come to see them as people, regardless of Weird Science? It's clear to me that everyone's subtle shift in character is the point.

In the world itself? I think they were trying to get Mark relaxed and normalize him by giving him an actual life experience. You need a functioning employee who is not crawling after goats to get work done, and the work is important, so they say, so why not try a reset. Outdoor wellness room.

They took Mark, who throughout this season they've made clear is crucial for finishing 1 file as quickly as possible, into a frozen wilderness. For 2 days. And it wasn't just Milchik, Helena also signed off on it. It made absolutely no sense for them to risk that. Except that the plot demanded it.

I had a feeling season 2 would be sloppier than s1 as soon as the twist happened at the end of episode 7 of s1. Everything in the show was so meticulous up until that point, but that felt so forced and silly to me. Thing is, it wouldn't have bothered me in a show that didn't set the bar so high.

I interpreted it as a desperate reaction by Milchick to placate them long enough to finish the work.

Like real companies, Lumon offers “perks” (including new ones recently rolled out by Milchick) and offsites (like the ORTBO) to increase morale and productivity.

I don’t disagree, but that episode also ruled. I just wish Ben Stiller would get possessed by the ghost of David Lynch at this point and let the show dive deeper into its nightmarish, Jungian aspects, rather than trying to resolve the plot

IMO, since all of this is to get Mark S & the crew to sit down long enough to finish the project, making them content while having a bit more control is the point. Corporate having no clue how to make workers feel at ease is kind of the joke & horror.
