We went through this with zoning, and now we're going through it with building code: trillion dollar industries depend on these things, yet a bunch of precocious bloggers can swoop in and expose these institutions as full of pseudoscience. Does nobody do their job? @aarmlovi.bsky.social

Lol low is being polite
Policies that don't work stay in place.
And MOST public policy is written to benefit multimillionaires & billionaires.
the “progressive” view of regulations is that they are hard-won victories against capital and should never be pruned back.
-the “conservative” view of regulations is total laissez-faire, except when it means breaking ranks with first responders (incl. fire marshals).

'It seems reasonable' is a good enough starting position, but we must rely on data.

The Soviets were using chemical warfare ("yellow rain" ) against indigenous people in SE Asia
The entire US gov't was drafted to promote this
*one Guy, Harvard Prof Meselson , showed it was a pack of lies
not the only example
My intuition says that if the fire is burning toward the center of the building it would cut folks off from an exit (compared to the double-stair, where they can turn around and use the other exit)
Many practitioners treat these constraints as immutable and there’s no sector of civil service tasked with ground truthing codes structures, processes.
