Patently false statement. I live outside of city limits in the county, so while I am eligible for a library card, I cannot access online resources like Libby or online memberships to newspapers that the library offers residents.
Soooo just bc it’s not accessible to you doesn’t make the statement false, bc nowhere did I say ALL . I’m sorry you don’t have this option, petition your local library to fight for it, if it’s something you want or feel is useful to the community.
What?! I did not know that! I already love @libbyapp.bsky.social for being able to borrow books for my kindle. But did not know this about newspaper articles. Thank you for sharing this!
Last week the SOS of Missouri halted payments for digital resources. No specifics offered other than a parent complained about inappropriate material. Now he wants a rating system for digital material in these collections instead of just expecting a parent to monitor their own kid's reading.
Texas Residents: you can apply at the Houston Library website for a free digital library card, living anywhere in Texas. Will give you access to all of their digital services including Libby.
I love the Libby app as well. I returned to using it with the Amazon boycott and I have been impressed with the selection of books to choose from and the free access to periodicals.
They want an ignorant, uneducated population, who don’t have access to public libraries, well-funded public schools, or museums, or factual information in general.
There are some libraries that will let non-residents get a card. Sometimes there is a small yearly fee. Many are limited to US residents only but there are a bunch of those. (I’m Canadian and was sad at the US only restriction but for you it’ll work).
oh libby app is GREAT!!! you can not only read paywall articles, you can read ebooks, listen to audio books, and with Hoopla and Kanopy you can stream and watch all sorts of stuff from educational to fluff.
Libraries rule!
I'm so tired of greedy corporations putting everything behind paywalls. Folks here's what I do: I copy paste the URL into https://www.archive.ph . Most of the times this does the trick for me.
I ditched kindle subscription but want to read on my paper white so I downloaded Libby but there are some restrictions so I got Hoopla too (same deal - uses your library card)
Except that a trump executive order on March 14 has defunded the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, which funds the Libby platform, among other things such as interlibrary loan, the Talking Books Program for the blind and physically disabled, etc.
There is the irony. People complain about paying taxes. They also complain about paywalls. They completely ignore this facility that uses some of your tax money to pay the licences for a variety of sites so you don't get paywalls.
This is your taxes at work, and it's a bit silly to not use it.
I can get free subscriptions of the NYT, WP, & WSJ through my library. You have to resubscribe every 2 weeks but the price is right. I can also access Vanity Fair, Fortune & Quilt magazines etc through Libby.
Paywalls are annoying. But if you can afford to subscribe or donate to your fav journals, mags, etc., pls do. The people working there have to make a living too and in these times may be risking a lot to get the news to us.
Thank you!! Awesome! I am now listening to Craig Unger's book House of Trump House of Putin
@craigunger.bsky.social
Because it has been backordered @bookshop-org.bsky.social (& I also ordered American Kompromat)
It is so popular. (2 good recent referrals here on bluesky.
I feel so much better)
It seems every day I'm reminded of why I'm so proud to be a Canadian.
How on Earth could Trump possibly sell his 51st state idea to Canada. US America sucks under his rule. We wouldn't want to join even without him, but come on, he is definitely not a selling feature.
FYI, I went to the public library to "renew" my card. Basically, she scanned it and said, "All done." While I was there, I looked at the new books section, and there were LGBTQ stickers, and AFRICAN stickers on some of the books. I was gladdened.
Librarian here. Depends on your local library. But definitely inquire at yours. And also check ro see if they subscribe to national newspapers. If so then yes can definitely get articles w your card.
Is there a more liberal city in your state? For many libraries you just have to live in the state to get a card. It might involve a bit of a drive to go by that library in person to pick it up at first. Also there are lots of libraries that will let a US person get an e-card for a small yearly fee.
I did it online but you have to go in physically. My library didn’t require that….maybe because it’s in my county? I haven’t called to see if they have specific ways disabled can still do it without coming in but I will.
Yes! My doctor actually told me that I could do that. I can’t drive due to medical issues so it’s about a 30 min drive to a county that has a much better offering so when someone can drive me I’m gonna check it out!
Thank You for that!
I would call that library and see if exceptions can be made for someone in your circumstances. I know friends who are home bound who’ve had libraries work it out with them.
My library also gives me access to the NYT online, as well as Pressreader which is good for most publications globally! And this is available in the library AND from home. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
In Australia we also get free access to an excellent streaming service Kanopy with library card.
And yes, you get ebooks, audiobooks, e magazines with the Libby app.
In addition to all the books within the state’s libraries and a wide range community services and events.
I love my library card😃
Libby is a free app by OverDrive that lets you borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines from your local library. Just sign in with your library card to access thousands of titles on your phone, tablet, or e-reader.
Libby (by OverDrive) mainly offers ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines, but some libraries previously provided videos. OverDrive has phased out most video content, so libraries now use Kanopy or Hoopla for movies. Check with your library for available streaming services!

Thank you
And requesting it is a way to get the subscription
My hometown said my township wasn't paying enough (and we voted down giving them more money), so I'd have to pay them $80/year.
Or get a card from the town where I get groceries, and the only restriction is that residents go higher on the waitlist.
Libraries rule!
There is a solution is to remove most paywalls though!

I saved money getting the Libby app!
I cancelled several subscriptions!

I'm trying hard to understand.
People need to discover what is there. This is one area where your tax dollar is providing the best investment!
Thank You for that!
Not sure I’ll take them up on this one- but it’s there
