When the news first broke yesterday the headline I saw was “40 people killed in Israel”, which obviously is terrible. When I read the article it mentioned down at the bottom that nearly 200 died from Israel’s retaliations. That’s supposed to be terrible too.
Just the numbers were reversed, in the mean time more than 300 Israelis were killed, the vast majority civilians. The vast majority Palestinians who were killed were Hamas terrorists, who were killed in Israel territory during combat. I’m sure the numbers will change, but get your facts straight.
Casualties in what might be the oldest currently continuous active war zone. Of all the complicated situations, this one may be the most complicatedest(tm)
It’s actually quite simple. Israel presides over an apartheid regime where Jewish people have freedom of movement, can vote in democratic elections and own land.
Palestinians are met with checkpoints, settler encroachment, separate roads, daily humiliation and violence.
You’re talking about the West Bank under Palestinian authority. In the Gaza Strip there are no settlers and checkpoints. In Israel the Israeli-Palestinians and Israeli-Arabs can vote, there’s a Israeli-Palestinian supreme court judge. For a journalist you’re not well informed.
How many do? My understanding is that many young Israelis have never even heard the term, since they're taught from birth that Judea and Samaria are part of Israel.
My mentor during my PhD was (and still is) an Israeli-Palestinian. Yes, Israel is far from perfect, and Arab-Israelis feel discrimination but less than black people in the US.
But Gaza Strip isn’t the West Bank. And Hamas doesn’t attack because of the checkpoints in the West Bank. They are two separate entities, and that’s what people don’t understand.
