The story you write for a "wide audience" will be trammeled by your own (incorrect) belief in the existence of normal people.
The story you write for the weird little goblin who lives inside your brain will grow wings because the world is full of weird little goblins

I am here to give you permission to write your really niche story that isn't 'highly marketable' and that brings you the most joy.
Embrace the cringe, vulnerability, and unapolagetic need to write your story- we really need less stories with a 'wider audience' in mind

I have to write my weird stories to appease my mind goblins!
(Look at Martha Well's Raksura books - I LOVE shapeshifters who keep their intelligence and personality when shifted.)
Rude.
😉
I mainly write what I want to read. So far, my biggest fan has been very pleased.
Wait..."Biggest fan"? Am I saying I'm fat?
Rude.
It's a tough thing to compromise for me and I'm always anxious that people won't get some things due to the cultural differences alone.
Goblins on the other hand keep stealing my socks.
back to my goblin hole
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is a wide audience movie.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" is a weird little goblin movie.
I enjoyed them both. But I rewatch Fury Road a lot more. 😀
