Boston also has (mostly) not been carved apart by highways so that helps

I wouldn't take that bet, but if I'm wrong I'll be happy to reflect on my views.
A) there being (in time) enough people that want to get between Brooklyn and Queens either for personal or work reasons
and
B) This route being better than going through Manhattan, both from a consumer and investment perspective
Neither point seems obvious to me.

Caltrain electrification seems to be similar (doing well, but still below pre-pandemic estimates)

The congestion tax is $180 a month, a nice night out, that people can take elsewhere.
And all to funnel $ to the badly managed MTA
I think people who stopped driving will resume driving after a few months & one or two disruptive commutes a week.
London saw a 30% drop.
We saw a 7.5% drop week over week ‘25 vs ‘24 for 1st week
Then a 4.18% drop 2nd week ‘25 vs ‘24
Not a roaring success in comparison
The EIA appears to have badly underestimated how effectively traffic would be reduced overall.
But I would love to see research on the subject once there's enough data.
Poor people in NYC don't drive to midtown Manhattan.
But they shouldn't have, because then the repairs get paid for by taxes because car subsidies are so normalized.

Contrary to what seppos may believe, you don’t need to buy enough groceries to last until the next administration. You can go every few days, maybe once a week.
When buying a sofa I’m not really worried about an extra $9.

People live in apartments: we're not stocking crates of Louis Vuitton for the winter.
Car free zones improve business for local shops because it creates an area where people actually enjoy going and being.
Carrying stuff in public transit is fine for most purchases.
