Moreover our ability to respond to said natural disasters is inherently political because governments do it. Budgets are political. Fire fighting is political. Disaster relief for victims is political.

I live in a country that burns itself every three years or so, and there's people constantly claiming budget cuts for fire departments, planting eucalyptus for the cellulose industry and harsher summers have nothing to do with that and we're "making it political".

There are no natural disasters, just natural hazards manifesting where we chose to build/live. A Cat 5 in the Atlantic isn't a disaster, but one hitting Miami Beach is. All disasters are political in that sense. Still, the partisanship of response & blame, the mis/dis-info, seems to be accelerating.

a lot of people apparently don't think this was caused by climate change. the problem is any individual disaster event can be seen as an anomaly - the increasing frequency of events is what demonstrates that the planet is changing

I’d add that natural disasters have always been political. The Great Fire of London was blamed on Roman Catholics. The Black Death was blamed on Jews. Very similar to the fires in LA being blamed on DEI.

I'd say there's a distinction between political and politicized here. Natural disaster response (and basically anything related to public policy) is inherently political, but doesn't have to be politicized.

Sometimes when people say “political,” they mean “partisan.” The response to natural disasters is now nearly divided among political partisans and everyone spouts partisan political talking points, which can seem insufferable to those that aren’t hyper-partisan.

The inherent flaw of a lot of " organization is bad, we should rely on ourselves" is that it's only ever a libertarian argument. You can't actually rely on neighbors in a crisis because they might not have the resources, which is why we - oh just throwing a long shot- take from those who have more?

People in the medieval era would spend huge amounts of time & effort trying to figure out the greater cosmological implications of natural disasters in order to figure out why they happened & to stop them happening again. They saw it in terms of God(s), but it was always necessarily political.

Earthquake happened because of the King failing to observe the rules of just war? OK the mechanism is wrong (as we now know), but that's inherently a political statement designed to address human behaviour. Humans have always tried to relate our behavior to natural disasters.
