What British people may not realize is that this is a direct, er, homage to a NYC local TV station, WPIX, that every year from 1966 to 1989 and then again from 2001 transmitted a 7-minute burning "Yule Log" loop for 2–4 hours commercial-free on Christmas Eve.

The 3 bar electric fire. One of the most important artifacts of my childhood (there was no central heating obvs, just the fire in the living room and a lot of hot water bottles and blankets). I used to sit on the floor, so I could be as close as possible to the fire, when it was on.

Depended on the individual flat. Ours was basically just a fireplace with a flat blue screen that lit up, next door had one like this, door next to ours had an image of flames, etc.

Hopefully this doesn't sound too Monty Python but we had one council fitted gas fire. Another room was heated in various ways over the years: Calor gas, paraffin heaters and occasionally electric fires.
