Finally, after long serving as an unofficial symbol, the bald eagle, with its white head and yellow beak, was officially declared the national bird of the United States on Christmas Eve.

So proud to be able to see a native family that has resided in the area for years on my way to work every day π₯°
Just magical, mesmerizing, and beautiful. We saw their babies π
We donβt deserve this beautiful earth as humans, the way we treat her now. We have to do better for all of this.
Beautiful! They make nests in our city of Pittsburgh, PA, USA. They put cameras on them and watch them every year until their babies hatch and they leave their nests. They return each year to have a new family!
Eagles are weaker than vultures, worse fishers than ospreys, dumber than crows , and DO NOT make the SUPERIOR Red Tailed Hawk sound.
I do not see the attraction, other than they are easy to spot because of the goofy white head.
Red Tailed Hawks are much cooler.
Aww,absolutely adorable bless you,I hope you're having a lovely Winter Solstice and warmest wishes for the new year blessed with peace, love and happiness to you blessed be ππ§ββοΈβ€οΈβοΈπ
While a nice sentiment, it took since the founding of this nation to accomplish this?
Our federal government moves at a snails pace stunting progress for all.
We found two dead ones one winter while doing trash patrol on the Buffalo National River and reported them to the park as well as the game and fish wardens. Never found out what killed them.
Iβve been lied to my entire life! π I had no idea. My dad and I used to watch lots of Sunday Morning when they would do nature highlight videos and PBS nature documentaries. I just donβt remember the call.
Kinda like a gull, honestly. High-pitched, screamy. Nothing like the fierce, harsh-sounding cry of a red-tailed hawk (their voice doubles in movies).
I found a comparison: https://youtu.be/CEmYEQ78zS0
Yes the difference is stark. Probably why we didn't actually name it the official bird until now. While the hawk call is definitely more substantial , audibly speaking. The eagle has a beautiful and sophisticated call as well
Yay, but is that really what you want to focus on in the last days in office? I hope this was a last minute fill in the last few minutes of the day kind of vote. Like βhey we have 15 minutes - letβs vote on this and clock out for Christmasβ kind of vote. We will show we can still be bipartisan.
And hoping against hope that Trump and Co. donβt allow DDT or even newer nβ deadlier poisons/toxins to push them to the brink of extinction a 2nd time!
I never heard of that, but then again, the eagle is not the symbol of wisdom (that belongs to the snake). The eagle is a universal symbol of power, strength, and healing, which is why the eagle feather is used in headdresses, healing ceremonies, and jewelry.
"Trickster and troublemaker" are not equivalent to wisdom or intelligence. The snake represents "slyness" to you because you must be thinking from a religious point of view. One of many reasons why it represents knowledge is because it sleeps in a circle--the sacred symbol.
I'm still pretty appalled that *this* is what our federal legislature thought was a necessary focus for their energies during the last few weeks before Trump Part Two.
From my government? A little more "promoting the general welfare" and a lot less "making rich people richer."
An unrealistic expectation, I know. I am supposed to be thrilled our lawmakers made our country's symbolic animal an official mascot while Project 2025 approaches. WOO MURICA!
Iβm sorry we have a national bird, but the ERA, (Equal Rights Amendment), fails?
We have to do better.
Good to know eagles are protected. Too bad we canβt say that about our women.
Iβm happy for the birds.

nobody gives a flying fuck in the current climate, especially outside America.
Here's what your official symbol should be

Eagles also really do eat the dogs (the little ones) and the cats.

Just Thinkin'

gov't. Whew. Dodged that bullet. AGAIN.
Wonder if we are we going to keep subbing the red-tailed hawk sound?

But I do understand why the movie trope came about. That eagle cry doesnβt inspire the same awe as say, their talons or wingspan.

All my long life I always thought it was the official national bird.

Meanwhile...
Ronald Searle..."American Bald Eagle realizing that its leanings are basically Marxist"
Wisdom of a snake? That is a new one for me. It makes more sense for snakes to be sly.
It may not be comfortable associating its brand with the U.S. π
Well It's About Time

The Bald Eagle is a lazy bird that harasses and steals fish from Osprey, who are better at fishing.
OTOH, I guess that's the perfect metaphor for the USA.
We have to do better.
Good to know eagles are protected. Too bad we canβt say that about our women.
Iβm happy for the birds.
It just couldn't be any more perfect.
And that includes Trump acting like a bitch.
Thatβs the kind of vindictive person he is
