We need to promote this, to make sure people know that they have sooooo much more power in these local-level elections. The reason you get crazies in those roles is because they picked elections that have very low-turnouts.
100%!!! We are a small indie bookstore creating safe space for books and people to discover each other, we have also birthed a small indie press and recently a non-profit news organization. With very little money. Please all LEAN IN, roll up your sleeves and get on the ground in your communities!
Even Springfield, MO ousted a right wing school board member and rejected another who was running for an open seat. We elected two reasonable women to the school board. For Southwest Missouri that is HUGE!
That's wonderful. Never understood why people can't accept people for who they are, even when they're different than you. Or should that be different from you. Sigh.
The Focus is a fairly conservative paper, but there is some truth to this. The current city council has tried to court culture war issues as a whole, among which include LGBTQ+ rights. The ousted candidates in particular went after them several times and made negative comments about queer people.
In addition, Debbie Crucher, the conservative candidate running for Fridley’s spot, lost handily, and was connected to some openly homophobic comments. No election is a single issue one, but wasting city time on banning drag, hampering pride, and doing abortion bounty laws was clearly unpopular.
Way to go Missouri! Yes, get involved.
Our voices matter.
There were massive protests on Saturday, here and globally, against Trump, his tariffs and policies.
The backlash was enough to worry the Republicans to put pressure on Trump. He folded right after saying he wouldn't.
Keep the pressure on!!
The Tea Party reshaped the GOP by running everywhere and moving with discipline. We need that energy on the Left — but grounded in labor, housing, and climate. Local seats matter. Primaries matter. This is how we shift power from the bottom up.
A nation quote that you can see at FDR's memorial in D.C. reads, "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."
It all starts locally.
Learn the issues in your city, town, county, and state - make your voice heard at town halls, council meetings, school board hearings, etc. and VOTE in every election and referendum.
Don’t let politicians take you for granted. Make them actually WORK for your vote.
Now we're going to cycle off of that for a while to reckless dismantling of government services, or maybe evil abuse of non-citizens. I'm sure we'll get back to incompetent handling of national security again soon, before we hit Liberation Day II
George, have you finally/yet realized not to support zionism or Israel, and instead support Palestine & Palestinians?
Esp after new leaked footage from IDF proving their killings were deliberate slaughters, and that they clearly, objectively lied about it (as they have their entire existence)????
Yes! We just had 2 young progressive Dems win 2 seats on our Select board, beating out the Ultra MAGA candidates by a wide margin! Residents got sick of the dysfunction and pettiness that the Republican board members brought on.
I went to the University of Missouri-Rolla. The county is conservative; the city and university are more liberal. I heard there was "Hands Off" protest there.
Folks connected to LGBTQ+ Rolla come out for a protest every now and then, but they tend to be just a few dozen people on the street corners. Nothing like what most cities see.
I live here right now and it’s still pretty solid red. Even here we only barely went for protecting abortion when it was on the ballot. The last council was hard right because of backlash against COVID restrictions and went basically unchallenged for two years.
Conservative St. Charles and Wentzville, MO also ousted the haters off of their school boards. Winners say they want to get back to normal and focus on what kids need.
Good to see that some people realize that it’s the year 2025 and we are actually allowed to let people live their lives. Unlike those stuck in the 1950s.
These ideological groups start small, getting their toes in the door with “inconsequential” races and then patiently picking up followers. Stay informed at a local level! Know who’s running for school boards, city councils, etc
All this criminality. I just don’t understand how it can go unchecked? If the orange man purposely fucked the economy/stock market, isn’t that like sabotage or something?!
To all posters who have 1000s of followers:
Let's convert anger into effective action. What works are boycotts (ask Elmo). Wall Street calls it "demand destruction".
Here are the targets - get together to organize a different boycott each week, PLEASE? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JBq-2FdXpeNjva2h0T72q2NLKkRi2fTo/view?usp=drivesdk
Never, EVER let anyone convince you your vote doesn't matter.
I took part in my local elections in 2022, there was a mileage on the ballot to expand the county bus system and it passed, meaning my township now has a public bus route.
Scappoose: a hundred+ on the street. MAGA harassment and a few Trumpies but still… if Scappoose Oregon in ColumbiaCounty can rise up and resist… it can and will happen anywhere!
Yes yes yes! Repeal project 2025 and restore the rule of law and democracy 🇺🇸
It's what Republicans did/do and then use that local power not just for local gains but for things like gerrymandering and voter suppression to benefit them at state and national levels too
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Never think your vote doesn't matter, because that's _exactly_ what the fascist bastards are counting on people thinking. They are _not_ a majority, so they have to discourage as many as possible from using their vote to get the power they crave.
Rolla, MO. Was forced into mandatory fun by the US Army while I was at basic training, at a bowling alley there. Then forced to go listen to an Evangelical church service.
They would be lucky to have gay people move there and spruce the place up, it desperately needs it.
It’s a college town. I’m surprised they won seats. Somewhat liberal area. Lots of really smart people. They were not going to go along with banning books. My Alma Mater.
Poof that we're not doomed to a thousand-year MAGA Reich. There are still lots of good people who are fighting like hell and winning. We can do this! Don't give in to the narrative Trump and the rest try to spin of their "overwhelming mandate" and inevitable success.
Half the country voted for a person who would implement a death to homosexuals (death to unwhite people and women who didn't want to be slaves also) policy, if only he could. They knew this when voting for him, it the actual reason why they voted for him, his Nazism, even when otherwise incompetent.
Missouri voters have approved recreational marijuana, and women’s reproductive rights. But the state is trying to take the reproductive rights away. I grew up in Missouri & I’m proud they’re fighting for their rights. Unfortunately now I live in Texas, & we can’t petition to vote on these rights
On May 10th and June 21st, 1933, Hitler ordered the burning of 25,000 books that were deemed “un-german”. From those written by Jewish people, to books on feminism, to books on pacifism… if it went against the goals and values of the Nazi regime, it was burned. This was in an effort to enact-
The censorship of books was one of the first things Hitler ordered upon taking office. 100 days after he was appointed Chancellor. Trump has 21 days to beat his record to burning books.
We have been working to build our library of titles deemed offensive by the latest regime and it’s been tough. I’d like to think that it’s likeminded people trying to do the same but not sure. We’re excited for the latest shipment! We’re in the south so the kids are about to learn about 1/
It’s up to us to arm the next generation with knowledge in the history that’s being erased. If anyone has a copy of “They Thought They Were Free”, please let me know. I can’t find a single copy of this and am hoping it’s coincidental.
The trail of tears, “States rights” in the Civil War, Underground Railroad, Labor Laws (triangle factory), child labor, a whole lot of Civil Rights, women’s suffrage and the KKK. 2/

EVERYTIME I drive thru, I stop at the Famous Rolla Pie place.
If Trump REALLY WAS a sleeper agent of Russia's bent on utterly destroying the country, WHAT WOULD HE BE DOING DIFFERENT?
Phelps county strong together. Let’s keep this train rolling.

I’m pretty sure Steve Bannon cooked this up the first term, or before the election.
It’s been amplified this time around, and is super effective…
We have the smarts and diversity here due to the uni! Which enriches normal every day lives of the people, whether they know it or not.
One might even say they are getting their inclusion points.

We lack uh, leadership, HARD. I recently started rallying the locals but it is slow going. I’d like to amp this up exponentially.
Once locals hear what’s going on they get outraged and want onboard.
The winds of change are coming friends. I plan to be there.
What say you?
If you've got a dollar or an hour of free time you could start the change you want.
But you, specifically the person reading this, need to get involved

This is for those who haven’t been paying attention over the years:
Gen. Milley stopped 45 from shooting protestors “in the legs”… but, 47 doesn’t have Gen. Milley there now.

Rolla is probably the most diverse city in Missouri, if you math local population vs student body the uni provides.
Yes it’s not a big city, but it ain’t your typical show me college town.
Keep sharing the good word friend.

(I left Vanzant, MO in 2019 because I could no longer tolerate the bigotry. Glad the larger municipalities are growing hearts).
