Really not looking forward to living in the worst parts of a william gibson novel because of all the people who misunderstood the point of william gibson's novels

Do you realize that there is a 1957 film warning about Artificial Intelligence? It's called "The Invisible Boy" (it also has Robbie the Robot in it). It's cheesy and juvenile, but it was WAY ahead of its time. I just thought you might find this amusing or maybe horrifying?
I just said something along these lines to my brother tonight! Our parents have become Musk stans, somehow, and I was (rhetorically) asking my brother how our mother, who read the same cyberpunk dystopias I did, can support someone who wants to create those dystopias.
Maybe they did not misunderstand the point, but believe to be better, smarter than that. And in Peter Thiels case, they even believe they are saving us from ourselves.
Or they just don't care about anything as long as they keep getting richer and face no regulation and restrictions.
Never read a WGibson novel but I know we are facing a dystopian hellscape. I’ll check him out. I’m grateful Joe Biden stepped into the void & held back fascism for 4 years, & to Kamala Harris, whose joy & competence gave us a real choice. I But I think Joe’s compassion for M.Garland sunk the ship!🤷♀️😇
They just take away the wrong lessons. Just like Stump and his passion for tariffs. His Econ professor said Stump was the dumbest pupil he ever had, or something like that.
I knew we were cooked when an adaptation to a book about the perils of male toxicity resulted in dozens of shitty Silicon Valley fight clubs. Same energy.
Yeah my mantra is "if I had to live through Shadowrun why haven't I at least gotten the magic powers or gotten to be a Dwarf, why am I only getting the all powerful megacorps"
Only if we're very very very lucky. And even then, there's gonna be WAY too much attention paid to the STEM kids and not nearly enough to the social sciences and humanities.
People saw cyberpunk stories and thought "hey this is cool" when in reality it is all max dystopian lol
But many think that dystopian = post-apocalyptic. Cyberpunk is late-stage maximalist consumerist capitalist dystopia, and post-cyberpunk is kinda like a greenwashed version of that
I wish I remembered enough of Neuromancer and the like to quote or reference them. I read speculative fiction to entertain myself, or escape myself, and it’s becoming frightening to realize some read them as blueprints for elitist utopias
I have read and re-read Sprawl, Bridge, and Blue Ant trilogys. There’s something weirdly soothing about his style, even as Gibson parades his horribles for us.
Trump supporters still think he has nothing to do with Project 2025…even with executive orders. Why so ignorant and easily lied. Women saying they voted for him to protect their daughters re-pro-choice even after they see interviews where he says he’s pro-life and women should be punished 😳
Good point. But post away here & surely we will get thru this. Again. Some more. Ignore them & they will surely go away. No one gets out of this life alive. They can go play with themselves. Bills still need to be paid, crops still need to be harvested. Ignore the overrated circus.

I would bet money that Elon Musk sees himself as Joiler Veppers from Iain M. Banks' 'Surface Detail' (novel in his Culture series).
I don't think books are their thing to begin with.
Or they just don't care about anything as long as they keep getting richer and face no regulation and restrictions.
"if they think you're technical, go crude"
Summon him!
Instead, we're getting Bladerunner, as made by the Hallmark Channel.
Gibson was probably too optimistic and didn't count on the weaponized stupidity.
But we have to find the ones who actually did understand them and still wanted this
"It's like watching your town library being burned down by people who don't read."
This seems to be exactly where America is right now.

He’s good at seeing trends. Maybe he already saw this coming.
My swipe to type has memorized “Greatdismal” from frequent usage.
But before Snow Crash, we're getting Sterling's Heavy Weather
