When I was a kid, we had a boxed set of albums of ‘folk songs’. I remember Odetta and Leadbelly. I’ve forgotten so many of the old guys who passed on what became what we listen to now. I hope there’s a YouTube archive somewhere, but I need to do my own before it all gets scrubbed.

I used to listen to a KUT program (“Twine Time”) that was “Rock n Roll before it was Rock n Roll”—i.e., blues, soul, etc from the 40s and early 50s. I swear to gods, EVERY SINGLE TIME I would learn that yet another Rock n Roll classic (by a white band) was a cover of a of a song by a Black artist.

Growing up in Chicago in the 60's we listened to a show on WFMT that aired at midnight every Saturday called "The Midnight Special" with the Leadbelly song for the intro.
WFMT was (and still is) classical except for this show featuring folk/blues and strange English comedy sketches by the Goon Squad

I've been playing blues on the Hammond and Rhodes for decades keep at it man
The blues comes from slavery and when someone was dying the skin pigment was identified

While I still loves the blues and have a lot - the world is truly better off without me playing it - My parents mainly encouraged it as a way to train my fine motor skills as I was born very prematurely and they did develop correctly - I leave music playing to the Irish side of the family ❤️
