at the risk of sounding like a massive boomer, as my Gundam watchalong continues, I am increasingly finding myself in "this is simply not as charming as pre-2000 Gundam" territory
that said at least the visual style is a huge improvement over whatever SEED was doing
I'm sorry but there is forever only one valid character named Setsuna and it's her, my beautiful daughter Setsuna "Eas" "Cure Passion" Higashi. if you say the name "Setsuna" I am thinking of Her and this is Not Changing
On the one hand, george bush has declared war on war, on the other hand Hari Seldon is doing shit directly this time, but on the gripping hand INTERNATIONAL RESCUE HAS STOPPED FUCKED AROUND AND PUT GUNS ON THE THUNDERBIRDS AND YOU WILL STOP STARTING SHIT.
Where SEED was post-9/11 in a "oh this is so awful that the hegemon bleeds" sort of way this is post-9/11 in a "OUR PROTAGONIST IS A MIDDLE-EASTERN CHILD SOLDIER ENGAGED IN ANTI-GOVERNMENT WARFARE FUCK YOU" way and I find it very funny by comparison.
to be fair SEED was also inspired by a middle eastern protagonist, in that the director read about an iraqi american US soldier on deployment in his newspaper. And yes if that timeline makes no sense you're right he misremembered the war in question for the interview where he stated this.
There's a really noticeable jump in production value between SeeDest and 00, especially wrt the former's abundance of recycled footage. My guess is they blew so much money on Turn A and then were able to spend more again after SeeDest made so much money in Japan lol
My personal opinion is that post 2000 Gundam shows only start to get their footing with IBO, not to say previous ones are bad per se but they definitely have their issues
So much of whats integral to gundam to me is baked into what the 1970s dev team thought the future WOULD be, that kind of "zeerust" or old and out of date sci fi, like Star Trek The Origional Series. That said, 00 is actually WAYYYY more *cohesive* and planned out than like, G or Wing or Seed
Its more trying to be a sci fi again and thinking about weird stupid social shit even if in a kind of dumb way sometimes, than like, JUST trying to recreate gundam OR just trying to create a teens mech show. Especially in the first season.
Its like what if wing took itself more seriously as a setting rather than as a justification for sicko lines and was a melodrama aimed at slightly older teens who like maps. Theres still some good sicko lines though. AND THE BEST GUNDAM NAME EVERY ACCIDENTALLY MADE (in season 2, in my opinion)
I think the characters are super hot in their way which got me slightly more into it but I ultimately bounced off sadly? I would give it another go, I watched about half.
I am so curious about this after finishing 00 last month and just starting Wing now. (Also wing is the stupidest shit ever and i kinda love it for that lmao).
00 is calibrated to your sensibilities to an extent I think you're probably going to be surprised about. Lots of girlfailures, sickos, maybe the funniest blonde rival dude to ever do it, and a shocking amount of gender.
hes so fucking stupid hes so fucking obsessed in such a weird way. weeb himbo char. hes like if you made a char to be a character in a fighting game only no one else is. takes a while to get to him though iirc.
We must remember this was the Gundam from 2007. So if SEED was written during the flurry of support for the war on terror then this was written on the downturn of public support. (at least from my pov)
I've only seen part of one episode (which I happened to catch on Japanese TV) in '07, and I think it was a clip show (all I remember is a bunch of scenes of Gundams slicing other mobile suits in half).
But "Daybreak's Bell" has colonized my brain, since it was played EVERYWHERE (geeky) at the time.

she's my favorite so far

this is exactly what I was just saying. Gundam knows writers who use subtlety and they're ALL cowards
Except its actually good.
The answer will tell you what kind of Gundam fan you are.
I love him so much
Woke: I just need her to be okay and heal from her past.
It's her and p5 kawakami, I just want to hug them
She only gets better from here on out.

Imho
(And I think the AGE songs are fine. Not my favorite, but still good.)
I'm still amazed the dub got aired on tv
that said, that intro is probably my favorite introduction of a Gundam
