Even with a generous interpretation, I must the timing of this name change was poorly chosen. The actual material (e.g. the training course "Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR): Practical Strategies for ACS Editors") is still there. And I can still recommend it!

I don't - but at least most of the links in the ACS DEIR learning essentials capture on Internet Archive still work (https://web.archive.org/web/20241013094532/https://www.acs.org/content/dam/acsorg/about/diversity/deir/resources/deir-learning-essentials-2024.pdf). The training is a very nice, interactive, resource, but does not contain any unique material in itself.

My understanding when talking to people for this article is that inclusion is the “active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity”? Diversity can sometimes just be “checking boxes”, my understanding is the commitment has doubled down.

I am in no way defending ACS in this moment, but as former GTCA Chair we internally pushed hard years ago to change the name. Leadership after me landed on ACS Pride circa 2022

I don’t think anyone needs to defend! My favorite part of reporting on ACS is it’s a member-run society and there’s so many rich stories/perspectives of how big changes happen in a giant member society. And pushing for a name change like that sounds like it would have been a good story to cover!

Shortest version is that "gay and transgender" does not capture the range of queer identities and we strongly felt the subdivision name centered allies over our community. The original name was a play on the DNA bases but it no longer served us.

It seems like something to keep an eye on and see if a story is there to follow up. But in this moment, I haven’t had anything come to me as intention to stray or leave DEIR behind. Right now the headline would be members upset at “how” updates are happening and what does it actually mean.

It has been moved to “inclusion”, but the new page has been heavily edited, and does not mention “diversity” or “DEIR” anymore. Other forbidden words like “underrepresented”, “historically marginalized”, “gay”, “transgender” have also been removed. See my thread.

I guess they won't be publishing our manuscript on promoting diversity in hiring, which is in revision at the moment (highlighted in Nature). It has gender and diversity in the title so we may be looking for a different journal 🤬 NOT from the US.
