one subtext of that bus thing: Harris went to Berkeley public schools ~1969 - 1976. In 1968 Berkeley was the first school district to fully desegregate - racially and economically - by, yes, doing a lot of cross-town bussing.

IIRC she lived in West Berkeley that whole time, in a neighborhood that was poor & heavily minority.

But she went to Thousand Oaks elementary school, in a VERY tony neighborhood - now one of the wealthiest in the country.

By comparison here’s the route from Harris’s childhood home to her local elementary school (now called Rosa Parks).

Nothing’s cheap in Berkeley any more but homes sell for ~1/2 the neighborhood to which she was bussed.

I assume the bus thing is supposed to implicitly remind people that she was part of school desegregation, but just saying "she got to school on a school bus" is a piss-poor way of even dogwhistling that.

I'm thinking just about any American born after 1950 spent a significant amount on time on a school bus, whether for court mandated bussing or because their were no schools in their area - I did both, growing up in Denver.
