A guy was so horrified by what Trump did that he bought a full-page ad in the front section of the national Sunday New York Times — which costs somewhere north of USD $100,000 — asking him to resign

And it’s not the only one in the section. Such personal gestures have long been a feature (and a revenue stream) of the NYT but given they were inspired by Friday’s events this is an unusual volume of worthy but expensive choir-preaching
No, this is good. The more times calls for Trump's resignation or impeachment get pushed in front of people, the more those calls stay on people's minds.
But he's probably at least getting the attention of more folks who have not yet entered the fight as civilians can. People are either paralyzed, don't have the time or resources (cert. not for something like this) to get involved, need a push, or don't believe in their own power. Every action 1/2
counts. You first get the believers, and then the naysayers may take note, especially if there is truth at the core. This is tremendous. I wonder if WaPo rejected him. That would have been an even bigger accomplishment, in recent times, IMHO. 2/2
If a full-page ad costs $100,000, then what did the full-color multipage advertorial inserts the Kremlin published in the New York Times for more than a decade cost?
Any grown man or woman in America who STILL voted for trump after the FIRST term shouldn't be allowed to cross the street without a crossing guard.
I don't care how much they paid for an ad. Your judgement is severely FLAWED.
They willingly voted for a RAPIST and FELON because he's WHITE 🚸
I’m reminded of watching my then 5 year old nephew’s first season of hockey. There was a lot of parents yelling “Same team!!” as youngsters went after their own. The only way resistance has ever been successful at defeating fascism was through a coalition of effort. All strategies are allowed.
Couldn't it be the case that he's doing this to persuade NYT readers to join him in speaking up? If the writer is 80 years old, he's not likely to be parachuting into Mar-a-lago himself to punch Donald in the mouth.
Look, individual citizens have limited power to influence events. This guy may be attending every protest event and contacting all his reps, but this is the act of an American who is desperate to help his country. I applaud his patriotism.
When raising awareness at a national level isn’t enough for these people is clear they just want someone to physically come and remove trump from power
And just a few pages later, an ad calling on GOP Senators to activate spines and take back congressional powers. Strong displays, now if those with the power could show a little strength.
Can we get the complete full text? Name of the author? I must say that I’m disappointed at the sarcastic dismissals of the author’s intent. We need many avenues of resistance. This is one.
The guy that bought that ad has really not been paying attention. Does he really think that DT experiences shame? Or that he is capable of acknowledging right from wrong?
The dude probably voted for him and is now trying a bit of woke, performative virtue signalling to assuage his personal guilt.
Do you actually think this is intended to persuade Trump to resign? Do you think a letter laced with righteous invective published in an extremely public manner might in fact be for the public? You castigate another for stupidity and only reveal your own.
Well, 1) he might be operating from the idea of "the second-best time to plant a tree is now", and 2) he might be trying to encourage his peers to join him in speaking up. Every bit counts now.
It literally does. Self-righteous outrage is actually a great dopamine source. They did tests a little while back, and it turns out the internet likes self-righteous outrage more than it likes cat photos. It's literally what Trump was elected on: self-righteous outrage against imaginary shit.
Can’t imagine that did much good. Perhaps the money could’ve been better spent funding public protests. The American people have to get out there, be visible.
Different people respond to different approaches. He may be reaching a demographic in a way that all the protests haven’t yet—and if so, let’s celebrate. Unless we run these kinds of “market channel” experiments we’ll never know. Don’t lose hope!
Speaking as someone who has BEEN protesting in the streets, WITHOUT funding, I can promise you that not one of our protests has gotten a full-page story in the NYT.
So in terms of visibility, this is objectively better-spent money. We can literally measure it.
Times Square was filled up yesterday with a pro-Ukraine protest. New Yorkers also did a huge protest at a Tesla dealership. There are so many anti-Trump/Musk protests going on or upcoming in my red state that I can't keep track of them.
Every old school republican that is prompted to push back on the klepto-conservatives is an incremental move of the needle. That he is knifed in the back by his own people is still the likeliest way out from under Trump - that or a stroke.
If you look for it, there were protests all over the country this weekend. There were mariachis at one. There was a band at another. Vermont completely trolled Vance. Many of these are suburban protests scattered across many locations throughout the entire US. Larger cities had larger protests. The good news is that they are growing every week, and we hope they are damaging Tesla's sales. I am very proud of the people who stood in small groups with signs at -8C.
This is really well written. I’m actually going to use a bit of this when I call my member of Congress on Monday. I’ve been writing a script for weeks in my head feeling paralyzed because I’ve never called a representative. I’m gonna use this as the kick in the butt I need.
To all of the arm chair keyboard warriors shitting on this. Please list the 5 things that you did last week that made more of an impact, or resign from being AssTrolls on bluesky.
He deserves to be struck by lightning while on one of his stupid golf outings he once promised he'd be too busy to take and which cost taxpayers at least $2 million per day.

I can’t find it searching this and other quotes: “I was a member of the Republican party when it stood for fiscal responsibility and the rule of law.”
Kamala Harris should unconcede. 🇺🇸
You would reach more people, when you add a good description into the Alt-text field.
That is pretty easy, especially, when your image just contain text.
This way, you support visually impaired people and everyone else, who rely on a good filled Alt-text.

As brusque as my question was to Tim, it's a dynamic / pattern i recognize in myself—and I know it's something I need to change.
All of us need better than this.
I'm not even from your country, but even I could see what you guys were getting yourselves into.
Here in New Zealand, we are suffering because of the #1 US import - ignorance

But not sure there will be anybody who does it.
