cornell is playing in the "jacksonville classic" tournament this week. after beating cal state-fullerton, they take on utah valley today. it may be the single most swagless tournament ever arranged. the cornell recap has an action shot of a free throw apparently taken in a hospital cafeteria.

Yeah you guys were annoying as hell to play. Literally every time I thought we were finally pulling away you'd find a way to bring it back close. I've never seen a team shoot that well from 3 up and down the roster.

CSUs are weird. Some go by Cal State X (Long Beach, fullerton, east bay) some are called like SF State or San Diego State. But no hyphens for any, including UCs. it’s just UC Irvine etc, except Berkeley which also gets called just Cal lol.

It's weird in NY where everything used to be SUNY at ____ but the D-1 schools either dropped or appear to have dropped the SUNY from their primary branding (Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook) and there were always outliers like the smaller Buffalo State which had to distinguish itself.

I believe for the most part the CSUs were newly created with that name, whereas the X State schools mostly evolved from what were called “normal” schools, which taught teachers how to teach, or from other types of colleges.

Buffalo started as the private University Of Buffalo, then was acquired by SUNY and renamed SUNY at Buffalo, but that branding was dropped and they are now University At Buffalo.

Buffalo State... well, its naming is a mess. The wiki shows 8 name changes since its founding in 1871.
