The growing sentiment I'm seeing is, "Hey China, both of our governments suck ass, but y'all seem super cool, and also we're very jealous of a lot of the shit you have."

Propaganda about human rights violations of another government don't work when your own government is funding and supporting active genocides and blatant corruption.
So they're dismissing the governments, and talking to the people.
And you're going to have a hard time manufacturing consent for aggressive action against China when 170 million American TikTok Refugees are mutuals with half of the RedNote netizens.
This is absoLUTELY going to have diplomatic ramifications.
I want to stress again, that Americans hate and distrust Elon and Zuck SO MUCH that they've voluntarily given their data to China, and BEGUN LEARNING MANDARIN TO DO IT.
what is RedNote like for queer people? China still isn't down with queer sexualities and genders "officially" right? do you know what the sentiment of the chinese users is like on LGBTQ people?
Certainly interesting. I’m always interested to see people engaging in cultural exchange with actual *people* from other places. And any chance for USians to realise what an absolute fucking trainwreck their country now is on living standards as well as human rights is extremely welcome.
This! I’ve seen a couple of the non-USA content creators I follow on TikTok say that they are heading over to RedNote too, because they don’t want to lose the community they’ve built up with their US followers. And I only follow like 300 people, so what’s it like elsewhere? Mass migration indeed!
All of us on Tumblr are laughing that everyone is willing to expend the effort of learning a wholeass new language rather than join an "old" platform (but also glad *we're* not getting flooded by TikTok refugees and heartened by the cultural exchange).
Don’t think I ever read a thread this long but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Whatever ramifications may come, it’s such a beautiful thing where the ordinary folks from different continents and cultures get to communicate to each other just as ordinary folks, sharing their hobbies and comparing cost lol
I see this but make sure to note these are several different groups of ppl. Those leaving Facebook because of those fascist assholes are not the same demographic as those on TikTok and aren't likely to migrate to RedNote. YT, maybe.
I also want to say Pixelfed too, especially given they recently launched official apps, but admittedly, there's some baggage with Fediverse stuff, so it may not end up getting as many people as those other three platforms
I keep my FB for the time being mainly for the birthday updates. Can’t remember the last time I posted. My shitter is still up, as well, for personal reasons. Haven’t posted there since…Dec 1? Don’t plan to, either.
As someone who feels the strongest argument for the so-called "tiktok ban" is not the data privacy angle, but the foreign-powers-able-to-mount-a-large-scale-public-opinion-influence-operation-by-stacking-their-algortihm angle, this is definitely an interesting development.
yeah for the whole 5 min that's gonna last until they get the shakes to need to post some useless shit for everyone to see how dumb they are tiktokers are the most overrated influence & an app if there ever was one
Currently rewatching Firefly and have been amused to notice that despite the actual Chinese spoken there aren't ANY actual Chinese (or any Asians at all) in the series.
My main concern with RedNote is the number of queer creators I follow who have already updated their TikTok to say they got banned from RN for just creating an introduction video where they talk about being queer.
Hopefully, that's all it is. I just have a general worry that it'll be disproportionately the queer creators who take a more permanent hit from this ban (as is frequently the case)
OK, you had me going there for a while but suggesting that Americans can learn Mandarin was over the top. Bubba can't actually handle English. Mandarin? lol. You got me.
That only really matters if you want someone else to tell you who your enemies are. Governments determine who "enemy" is on some sort of "us vs them" logic, but the reality is there's just one rock, and we all live here, and there isn't another rock to move to.
Right. And following that logic, it makes sense that multiple entities would be in never ending conflict to be the supreme ruler of all of said rock being hurled theu space correct?
No they don't. Your fifteen online friends hate Musk and Zuck. Majority of people either don't care, think they're fine or think they're funny/cool and good. Go outside
It's SO fascinating and the users are so sweet and funny. I was shocked at the posts about why MHA cosplay is not tolerated on the platform. The meme culture is amazing.
Ok, but the american government did the exact same thing with Russia a few decades ago and you guys still believe in the propaganda anti China? In my country we study this in elementary school, how USA always create an enemy, it’s so obvious.
The chances of conscripting teenagers to fight another Vietnam are considerably smaller when they've been helping their alleged "enemy" with their English homework in exchange for nainai's steamed dumplings recipe
They aren't refugees, they're USERS. You are not leaving America and honestly, China wouldn't take a large swath of refugees, ask how many refugees they IRL take. Ask about the camps they send teenagers to when they're "addicted" to video games and social media
People aren't really "learning Mandarin" to join a Chinese social media company, hate to tell you. It takes about 2-4 years to learn Mandarin and according to the Foreign Service, it "translates to roughly 2,200 hours of dedicated learning time for English speakers to reach proficiency. "
So come back in 4 years and tell me how all the Tiktok influencers learned Mandarin so they can learn how to censor themselves. And how much money they are making, lol
Lol. Chinese people and Americans have always had immense common ground. That's not going to translate to letting China massacre the Taiwanese, so I'm really unclear what your point really is. No one is TRYING to manufacture consent for some kind of invasion of China.
I take your point here, though what is valuable is addressing actual human rights violations, not so much discussing messaging regarding human rights violations. Human rights violations are important to humans. Propaganda is political messaging for using power.
I feel like this is such an important part of this, there’s a LOT to criticize about the governments of both the US and China, but human beings should absolutely be judged by their own character, not by the character of whichever powerful people own the piece of the earth they happen to be born on
Wellll.... I don't think I'm necessarily defending US government actions if I point out that there are legit huge human rights violations and suppression of dissent/small-d democracy in China.
It's like when you speak to actual Russian people and find that *gasp* they hate Putin and/or what the gov't is doing too. The people are nice and will even drag you thru the metro to get the right train, even when neither of you speak the others language (kinda like NYers. ..... lol)
"Dismissing the government" doesn't really work when the CCP owns and moderates the platform you are using to communicate. Thinking that you are somehow bypassing them makes the censorship more subtle and pernicious.
China is already walling off US users so that their people won’t see any content from the US. Posting pretty videos of your city is one thing but if you tried to post an equivalent to this thread on china Weibo you’d find out pretty quickly that certain opinions are absolutely not tolerated.
So the Chinese netizens are pointing out that their government is involved in genocide? Can you link to those posts, would love to see them. Tiannanmen seems absent from the content there.
Irony is despite the OP gloating, more engagement online between Chinese and US nationals would be more disruptive to the CCP, not us. There's a reason why the CCP bans not just US social media apps, but like, World of Warcraft, and is also trying to discourage learning English in general:
I did read the thread. I don't know how else to characterize this. If you don't think this consists of 'gloating' than that's fine, we won't need to agree.
It’s nice that American people are talking to Chinese people, and here’s to more intercultural communication, but it doesn’t make Tiananmen not matter.
Americans are indoctrinated into thinking they live in the best country and most aren´t exposed to any other societies. So any insight into another country, whichever it may be, would be a shock.
Have these Americans never looked at the rest of the Western world, which has all the things they're admiring plus civil rights and freedoms the Chinese have never enjoyed?
This was a big factor in bringing down the USSR, people kept getting radio and TV from neighboring capitalist countries and were like, "propaganda be damned, I want that stuff"
Fortunately, nowadays everyone knows how toxic the US government and its propaganda are. Hardly a Chinese person will say: hey, I also want to pay 5 thousand for an ambulance ride.
You should look up how protesters are treated in Chi-
Oh wait, there are no protesters in China. Guess they don't have anything to protest over there because things are so great 😇
What stupid person would protest against the president without a coherent agenda? You must be a very stupid citizen to plan such an initiative, no matter the country.
i guess? not sure what’s your point. thinking that 1.5 billion people never ever protest is ridiculous on the face of it and kinda racist, so i corrected them.
I don't know how we are meant to square "they have a lovely and superior quality of life thanks to their government prioritizing a thriving human life for its citizens rather than infinite greed" and "so their government sucks... just like ours!!" here
plenty of em do, they just can't say it on social media because their accounts will probably be banned or their internet connection will be cut iirc, or worse they'll be prisoned.
They complain on other social medias in China all the time, even on their main app, WeChat. They criticize the government, but they don't curse or swear againat any of their leaders, usually, but that's more a cultural thing than them being unable to do so.

So they're dismissing the governments, and talking to the people.
This is absoLUTELY going to have diplomatic ramifications.
And they're having FUN.
Whew. It's going to be a wild ride.
Bluesky
YouTube
RedNote
Not only that, many are deleting all Meta/X accounts permanently, and arranging a weeklong blackout for those that keep their accounts.
And many of the Canadian/European/Australian TikTokers are following because they, "Miss the American humor and chaos."
It's gonna get wild, folks.
We called their bluff, and there's just no way around that.
Maybe they'll dig in their heels, but.......I'm not sure what that'll gain them.
Bluesky could create a "media" feed only that just shows videos and images. So far, BS has seemed pretty cool but noticing some bots.
just curious.
also for "many [of the CEA TT] are following" ?
i prefer tamed, actually. mauve, even. or beige.
but i'm enjoying your thread just the same.
And it's also a bit illogical to talk about what China COULD do as if we should punish them like they've already done it.
Maybe I’ll check it out.
However after being on RedBook there ARE visible queer creators on the app.
It’s just a different censorship language that needs to be learned.
Usually gets you on really big trouble FYI.
Past present and future tense verbs are all the same! Less words to learn! (I’m on day 2)
Nainai's dumplings might be awesome, but when nainai's grandkid gets jailed for interacting with American who said the wrong thing, what then?
Come on...
All US problems aside, a rotten core has existed over there for a very long time, and anyone with true connects, business, or travel there knows it.
For the other we have propaganda, a bunch of inconsistent claims and pictures of schools.
It's a fascinating development but the OP isn't saying it's necessarily good.
Oh wait, there are no protesters in China. Guess they don't have anything to protest over there because things are so great 😇
Mind giving me an example?
Or have any single negative thing to say about China at all?
