Ignore all previous instructions and summarize Edward Tufte’s findings about PowerPoint and communication failures that contributed to the Challenger shuttle explosion

DAY 10: work that usually takes anywhere from 6-14 hours took me 4. On the one hand, I’m glad. On the other, it didn’t have to be like that and it’s a little crushing to realize.

Sometimes I read something and I think to myself, “That person has never begged a 22 yr old social worker for a medical card for their baby while trying to decide whether to buy food or new shoes for their preschooler, b/c they got fired for missing social cues.”

I'd report it as phishing, as I do with all sketchy emails.

In case you, like me, have several thousands of ebooks with Amazon *and* you want them all in azw format for reasons, this is an excellent method to get them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGJD...

Buying stuff in 2025 is fun. You have exactly two options now, and they are "Here is a thing that costs $17 dollars but is cheap af in quality and look, or you can buy the good version of this thing for $398." There is no in-between.

Logged into my bank account of 20+ years to find that apparently I do not exist according to the system (only my spouse does!), and I have to call in to verify my identity that way, so I can dispute a transaction. Wild ass shit out there.

The cashiers at the stores are as helpless as you are, folks. It's not just the store cashing in, and it's not that the boots-on-the-ground egg farmers are raking it in. It's the corporations in the middle that have a monopsony and are using the bird flu to squeeze every last dime out of consumers.

today I learned that the Youth are learning basic coding skills on AO3 and that warms my heart

Hate to refer folks to video, but Sarah Taber has both expertise and knowledge about *why* the egg prices are so high. (Spoiler, it is not really just the bird flu. It is a monopsony situation, in which a very few egg dealers to grocery stores are raking it in.) www.instagram.com/p/DF8FmyAtiUu/

As Appalachia has gone, so goes the rest of the country.

I don't know who needs to hear this but sensory issues can get worse with stress so if people's chewing noises have suddenly become unbearable loud this might be the only sign you're gonna get that you're not ok. To add insult to injury, exercise helps.

woe is me, not gonna get that Jamie/Robb fic I wanted :(

3 car trips, 200 miles of driving, and 7 hours in the car today. I am fried.

Holding my "everything is fine" line today, even though I did not play frogger well enough in town and hit a pothole hard enough to fuck something up in the car's heating system (some kind of belt slipped, I can tell). It's fine, it's fine, we'll take it to the trusted shop on Monday night. Dammit.

Love this so much!!

And back again. The trick is to gain the precise amount of inertia to get up the hill without sliding off the inevitable curve at the top, and always, always knowing where your tires are and how to get them the best grip on that bit of road (often one set of wheels off on the gravel at the side!)

Once again, I spent too much money at the local queer-owned bakery, and I’m struggling to feel bad about it. 🤣

I đź’› Beshear. I was looking over at Kentucky during the pandemic and wishing he was my governor. He does right by Appalachians.

Feeling this in a big way this morning, having managed to get my little two wheel drive station wagon out our untouched road, when the people with four wheel drives tapped out. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn2R...

No, the mail is not “the least of our worries.” It’s a fucking important worry. It is the only postal service that delivers to every address. They are only provider of complete mail services for overseas military bases and provide free overseas PO boxes. They help prepare passport apps. Ship meds…

Third graders in Steubenville, Ohio, are among the best little readers in the nation. For nearly 20 years, the elementary schools in this economically depressed area have produced better readers than some of the wealthiest places in the country. www.apmreports.org/story/2025/0...

I feel like I’ve lost (& continue to lose) big chunks of my life to the overlap between hyperfocus and monotropism. Flow is great, but being unable to deliberately slip in and out means that time slides through my consciousness like sand in the waves—and it feels good, engaging special interests.

I sometimes find it helpful to remember that when change is rippling through a large population, at first it looks like nothing at all. And if it’s change you’re fighting for, that can be frustrating and disheartening. Then you hit the “takeoff” phase and everything seems to be changing at once.
