What's the point of pressing Trump on a guarantee when his word changes with the wind?
comment in response to post
Trump wants to impose a ceasefire so he can have a quick win. Zelensky's longer term thinking is frustrating him.

Okay, Calgary boy.

I think the word 'enemy' is harsh, but the damage the U.S. government has done to its trust and credibility will last for a while.

Without hyperbole, there will be lasting damage to the trust and reputation of the US.

I'm surprised it's taken this long for his antics to start hurting his bottom line.

I guess Legault hasn't seen these numbers yet.

I could see the federal government restarting Energy East pipeline by supporting it financially similar to how the Kenney gov. restarted KXL (before it was cancelled by Biden). Given the strategic importance of such a pipeline, I think the federal gov should play a larger role in enabling it.

These poll numbers would give the federal government the courage to face down any Quebec opposition to an east-bound pipeline. + I don't think it really matters that Quebec is against the pipeline. BC fought TMX to the bitter end, and a Conservative federal government would have less to lose there.

Just as it's never too late to start saving for retirement, it's never too late to build more export capacity.

The silver lining of this tariff saga is that it might kick start the economic reforms we would otherwise never do (i.e. internal trade, market diversification, pipeline expansion, etc.)

Didn't Mexico just agree to do what it's already doing?

If those tariffs ever come. Trump's tariff policy is turning into pub decor.

We'll see what the rationalization is if oil is exempted, but I doubt it's to do Smith a favour. It is likely purely out of self-interest knowing that it would raise gas prices in the U.S.
comment in response to post
He's not smart enough for this to be about dividing 'Team Canada'. It's purely about the U.S. needing it.
comment in response to post
If oil is exempted, it would be out of pure self interest in knowing that doing so would raise gas prices in the U.S. It would have nothing to do with pitting provinces against each other, nor would it have anything to do with P Smith's lobbying efforts.
comment in response to post
This is smart. It was only a matter of time before other countries begin to coordinate.

I think he will just keep dangling the tariffs over our heads without following through, because once he does, he loses that threat.

I find it interesting that she doubled down on increasing pipeline capacity to the U.S. You would think this ordeal would spur a renewed push for additional pipelines to tidewater (east coast).

This is a clever bit of soft-trolling.

"Trump’s tariffs will raise the price of fuel in America, which in turn will pressure his administration to lift them." A lot of assumptions in there. Increases in the price of fuel may just have the U.S. exempt oil and gas and not lift tariffs on everything.

Finally, if any of the other premiers had the opportunity to get facetime with Trump, I'm sure they would have jumped at the opportunity.

As much as you don't like O'Leary and Peterson, they're respected within MAGA circles, and having them since the praises of Smith can't be a bad thing.
comment in response to post
I listened to your podcast and I disagree with your take on Smith's visit to Mar-a-Lago. I think the key difference between Smith's trip and JT's trip is that Trump, and his courtiers, hasn't liked JT since the G7 in Quebec. Smith is actually endearing herself to Trump's inner circle.

He did really good. He looked very comfortable. Smart, funny, intelligent. Also hinted at some of the attack lines on PP (i.e. "career politician").

I thought he was pretty funny and charismatic.

Not that I like defending O'Leary, but I've only ever heard O'Leary say that Canada and the U.S. form an economic union, similar to the E.U. He's explicitly stated that Canadians would not want to give up their sovereignty.
comment in response to post
The truth is O'Leary has more pull with Trump than anyone in the federal government right now.
comment in response to post
In fairness, O'Leary wants an economic union, not statehood.

Canada and the EU should get together and put a 25% tariff on Teslas.
