ngl i love how the fascists are like vampires and have to be let in

Gov. Mills showed precisely the sort of integrity in the face of political pressure that the majority of the party currently lacks. More importantly, she did so extemporaneously and without hesitation from a purple state where this isn't a universally popular position. www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

I've always idolized Rik Mayall. British comedian best known for The Young Ones and Bottom, to American audiences perhaps better known for Drop Dead Fred. Controversial and often rude, you wouldn't necessarily expect life lessons from him. But there were, and I try to follow them. A thread 1/

This is fun: it seems like all fast food chains have stopped offering grilled chicken, dropping my sensible options to zero

It was disagreeable, to say the least; to be called out so plainly, and in such a manner; -- as ill befits discourse between gentlemen

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

An obvious point, but still worth making: if you think this is what God demands of you, then your god is a monster and an abomination that has never deserved a moment of worship.

I want to see city halls full of rumpled retired people ready to skeletonize a recalcitrant congressperson in 30 seconds, all across America

Jordan Peterson is another example of what I call a competency cosplayer. Informed people immediately identity him as an intellectual fraud, but uninformed people can fancy him an intellectual who flatters their unexamined prejudices.

It's going to be more important than ever to avoid police when people are in crisis. Here's a useful list that includes crisis hotlines and warm lines that do not contact police: translifeline.org/resources/co...

Do what you gotta do to not give in to cynicism. It's seductive, and will hollow you out if you let it. Keep your head and your hope. You've got this. 💙🤘💙

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

this kind of shit made sense back when musk was still widely admired and seen as non-political but the most recent polling shows he's hilariously unpopular, like 10-15 points lower than Trump's own low approval ratings. People hate this motherfucker! You don't need to clear your throat first

It's pretty cool that Eater put together resources for restaurants about how to handle ICE raids

While it's important to promulgate information like this, I *really* wish every post that did so concluded with "... and here's what you can do to help stop it." (Actions, not calls for donations.)

It's interesting to compare this with 30-40 years ago, when lots of heroes (esp in film) were maverick rule-breakers who The System was holding back - though often their "rule-breaking" was in service of reactionary ideas, so maybe it's the same picture.

Science (and science policy, and conservation) friends, I need your help! We are collecting *specific, clear* examples of harms caused by the Trump administration's attacks on science, to be included in an open letter. Can be links to news stories/social media posts. 🧪🦑🌎 #SciComm #SciPol

Read out loud to yrself. Listen to books on a walk. Or podcasts abt books. Write a poem, a story. These are forms of making it thru. Let them lead to political action. Call reps. Protest. Bug everyone abt action. Prod. Prompt. Poke. Pester. Plead. Proffer. Propose. Plan.

If you played TTRPGs between 1970-2004, PhD Candidate Geoffrey Ramirez (Binghamton U) is seeking participants for “Character Creation: The Tabletop Role-Players Oral History Project” as part of his dissertation. Interviews will be archived at the Strong Museum of Play (can be time-locked, etc)

I've been seeing lots of super compelling videos of park rangers and federal lawyers and other federal workers telling their stories. Talking about what they did at their job, how it helped the American people, and why they want to keep doing those jobs. This is the way.

Two red buttons meme where the choices are "Violent revolutions are terrible actually" and "Getting to watch the tumbrils roll"

This is your codex of demon summoning. Read it carefully; every line is powerfully binding and written in human blood... oh, wait, no, sorry that's actually your workplace manual of safety rules and regulations. But, still.

It's interesting how the people who inundated my childhood with comments about how the world is good and evil, right and wrong, are now the people who are most obviously evil and wrong.

happy Friday/happy end of round 5, @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social voters! today is Sleater-Kinney vs New Pornographers and there’s also rockism, my awesome 10 year old and her excellent taste in music, Jon’s aversion to fun, and wow is that a new URL? it is!

We never did listen enough to Paine.

The Republican Party installing a villain named Vought is one of those “the simulation is glitching” moments.

We're gonna look back on this era and be so baffled and infuriated about how much time the media spent complaining about DEI trainings. Yes some of them are silly but overall, companies recruiting minorities and trying to create less hostile workplaces is good!

I just posted this one today, but it’s been something I’ve wanted to write for a while. Free to all, as always. Share it if you like it, please. 🎥👻 www.patreon.com/posts/120558...

This is worth putting someplace that you see it every day. Action can keep despair and anxiety at bay. Action includes calls and marches and also volunteering and making art and integrating yourself into a community.

Yesterday I had a follow-up appointment for my recent medical troubles and it was maybe the best experience in a doctor's office I've ever had. First, the NP I consulted with was mindful enough to say "Do you want to talk about diet, or are you aleady overwhelmed?" She got it.

As always, @chriswarcraft.bsky.social is a real one.

A GREAT newsletter about poetry! I loved this quote: "The idea that poetry is some kind of inaccessible or elitist work is one of the many ways society has worked to keep us as out-of-touch with our feelings as possible."
