Hurrah for upzoning in Sacramento! "Rents in Sacramento continue to decline, dropping an average of $250 from a year ago." And: "the benefits of more housing supply are shared across the affordability spectrum," including "both market-rate and subsidized affordable housing."

We’re fixing Atlantic Avenue! This is what a comprehensive community-led rezoning looks like 🏠

this is literally the arbitrary administrative power generations of thinkers on the right have invoked to support gutting federal regulation

The gays and theys need to get our digital security together in this day and age so here’s version 2 of Pink Pony Club but it’s about why you should switch all your group chats to end to end encrypted Signal with disappearing messages turned on ;)

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

Blue Cities: Declaring yourself a "sanctuary city" for LGBT people fleeing red states is meaningless if there aren't any houses or apartments for LGBT people fleeing red states to live in. www.joemygod.com/2025/05/tenn...

When vacancy rates rise, rents fall. It's the most robust finding in housing. If you want housing costs to fall, you have to build.

EFF today helped file a motion for a preliminary injunction to end DOGE's illegal access to millions of federal employee records www.eff.org/files/2025/0...

There is no credible progressive argument against building a ton of new homes at all income levels. Opposing making it easier to build new homes isn’t progressive. It’s super conservative & an argument for a permanent shortage & permanent high rents.

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?" Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

The deepest reporting so far shows the government is fighting at the Supreme Court and in public to keep someone in a foreign torture camp based on an obvious lie given by a single unnamed source to an inarguably corrupt police officer. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

I understand that Kilmar Abrego Garcia may have abused his wife but I still don’t believe, given the values enshrined in the constitution and the principles of the rule of law, that he should become Secretary of Defense

Your location data isn’t just a pin on a map. It can reveal where you work, worship, protest, or seek healthcare—and it’s being harvested, sold, and weaponized. Lawmakers must act now to protect our privacy.

Very little surprises me about the NIMBYs of Livable California anymore after spending so many years attending their meetings. However: hearing someone say "Deport Scott Wiener" at the end of today's call and everyone laughing in response really was shocking, even to me.

Columbia University has failed to defend academic freedom & freedom of speech & allowed a great institution to be bullied & extorted into submission by an administration hellbent on contorting higher education to their will. The AAUP condemns this capitulation. We can & must fight back.

To be explicit about why I say "we need to build infra" - housing in blue states, almost without exception, is SCARCE and EXPENSIVE. Trans folks are POOR and often PRECARIOUSLY EMPLOYED. This is going to translate to an explosion of local trans and queer housing insecurity, almost instantly.

“The right to have access to every building in the city by private motorcar, in an age when everyone possesses such a vehicle, is actually the right to destroy the city.” - Lewis Mumford

Happy International Women's Day! May every woman find their way into the room where their voice is most needed—whether that's a board room, a legislature, or a PTA meeting. When we stand up and speak our values, women change the world!

UPDATE on Amer. Fed'n of Gov't Employees, AFL-CIO v. U.S. Office of Personnel Mgmt: We've filed emergency motion for temporary restraining order directing OPM, Musk, DOGE, and other def's to stop stealing OPM data, and to destroy any copies of data they've made. drive.google.com/file/d/15Ail....

EFF just helped file a temporary restraining order to stop the Office of Personnel Management from illegally sharing personal data with DOGE.

Our case is fairly simple: OPM’s data is extraordinarily sensitive, OPM gave it to DOGE, and this violates the Privacy Act.

I can’t believe it - after years of advocacy, exclusionary zoning has ended in Cambridge. We just passed the single most comprehensive rezoning in the US—legalizing multifamily housing up to 6 stories citywide in a Paris style Here’s the details 🧵

"two lawn signs sit side by side. One proclaims NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE FROM, WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE OUR NEIGHBOR. The other reads SAY NO, urging residents to oppose an apartment building that would house the new neighbors the other sign purports to welcome." www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

A good, workhorse building we should build more of: Either 12 units for singles or 6 family-sized units. Everyone gets a balcony. Easily fits on a standard 5,000 square-foot lot. Fits around six parking spaces in the back. And yet, illegal to build in the typical US residential neighborhood.

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942. I know. I was there in those camps.

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

The only sustainable way to bring down rents is to build a lot more housing. If you really want to stick it to the landlords who are increasing rents in the aftermath of the fires, build a lot more housing and force them to compete for renters—not the other way around.

The typical planning public hearing, depicted with some atistic license.

When confronted with age estimation face scans, many people will refrain from accessing restricted websites, even if they have a legal right to use them. Government should restrain this hazardous technology, not normalize it via age verification mandates.

"What can we do?!" The incoming Trump admin is clearly more prepared than they were last time. They've hit the ground running with a parade of horrible executive actions. But we've been planning and preparing too. What we can do is STAY FOCUSED. Here's our plan: www.fightforthefuture.org/2025

“In authoritarian regimes, corporate and government power are intertwined. To protect privacy, it is not possible to keep government power in check without addressing corporate power.” Seems like a new Solove article we really need to read —

Weird how California's homelessness rate is 5.2x that of Texas! I wonder what it could be! It must be drugs, mental illness, and Texas shipping homeless people to California! On a completely unrelated note, here's a chart of how many new homes were permitted, and what the median home price is:
