It’s was lovely to speak at #Humanists2025 and share the ocean love this afternoon. There have been some fascinating ethical and current affairs debates here today.

Happy World Bicycle Day.

I am back from leave, and very excited to share that @chrisbataille.bsky.social and I have a new report out called "Strategic decarbonisation of the Canadian iron and steel industry: A worker-centered path to cut emissions, increase value added and strengthen global supply chains". 1/5

if you missed it, a thread on last night's big result:

Interested in coming to Canada for a postdoc? The new Canada Postdoctoral Research Award program now has details (there's additional $$ to recruit Black postdocs to Canada). So if you're interested in geohazards, remote sensing, GIS, etc send me a note 🧪⚒️❄️🏔️🛰️ www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etu...

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

My fave history book of 2025 (so far) is @moudhy.bsky.social’s Between Two Rivers. It’s so beautifully written, so compassionate, so enthralling — it’s a joyous ode to studying ancient Mesopotamia, written by a wonderful scholar. And her audiobook is great too 👍 www.audible.co.uk/pd/B0D1GRSJ8...

Trump's tariffs: They're big, they're bad, and it's getting ugly out there. Link to podcast about this with the old 538 gang! open.substack.com/pub/gelliott...

🚨NEW from me: I couldn't very well not write about @ember-energy.org's Global Electricity Review, could I?

New newsletter up! There's too much to cover. We're gonna have to talk more about all this on Thursday. ezralevin.substack.com/p/hands-off-...

Know Your Rights at US Borders This ACLU resource seems more relevant than ever. I used a similar resource ~20 years ago from a Palestinian human rights NGO when flying through Ben Gurion airport while living briefly in Palestine. It came in very handy when I got pulled aside for questioning.

Great job @justinwolfers.bsky.social! Enjoyed the clear succinct answers. We need you more in these types of settings

Joined Hindu community members at the BAPS Toronto Mandir yesterday for the first day of Ram Navami celebrations. Thank you for sharing your traditions and culture with me. Happy Ram Navami!

My Trade Secrets response to the tariffs. Bad news: these tariffs cd be worse than the 1930s & the Republicans are inflicting their deep pathology on the world. Good news: this is as yet a US trade war, not a world trade war. Others can resist following Trump's crazy road. First 300 clicks free.

We will have a lot to talk about starting April 9 on the new David Frum podcast, aka "the free trade hour" www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqKI...

Great news! "Canada to partner with Australia on early warning detection system in the Arctic." 🇨🇦 ❤️ 🇦🇺 www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

It didn’t get a lot of attention but the Department of Energy complied with a court order on Friday and reinstated fired probationary employees. It says it’s expediting equipment and badge reissues so that they can return to work. www.eenews.net/articles/doe...

Share the media. The news is compromised. We're starting to boil over.

This feels like one of the biggest open goals ever. Just show up and talk to a bunch of disenfranchised republicans. I know it probably isn’t always going to be pleasant, but you are also the person that chose to do a job where the job is ostensibly representing their interests

Dear US colleagues, In response to the Trump administration, my university @univ-amu.fr is setting up a new program dedicated to welcoming American scientists wishing to pursue their work in France. There are several M$ in the budget. www.univ-amu.fr/en/public/ac...

Donald Trump, I was wrong about you!!! You say that climate change is a “hoax.” But in fact you are a sleeper agent from the fringe environmental left on a mission to RAISE energy costs, BANKRUPT oil refineries, DESTROY the US automaking industry, and FORCE everyone to live in cities Wow!

Egg shortages. Fatal measles outbreaks. Airplane crashes. Crypto scams. Tariffs. Betrayal of allies. Pardons and special favors for insurrectionists, crooked mayors, and online pimps. The American people voted for change!

I like being a married dad in my 40’s because the bar to being a good hang is so low — you’re into sports, can talk about at least 1-2 of business, markets, politics, local dad life, you enjoy food and/or coffee? Cool, let’s hang.

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.” Who needs a gallon of ketchup?

What Europe should do RIGHT NOW: Make it extremely easy for US scientists to get long-term visa, create as many additional research jobs in key areas as possible, create new, generous science and research funds. People are losing their jobs over there NOW. Let‘s welcome them.

This is why “Information” is so central to Infomocracy. I thought that agency in the novel represents a kind of UN meets Google hybrid
