we believe we are special and we simply are not

Are marketing departments saying "From the guy behind Suicide Squad" because they assume people will think of the actually good James Gunn movie and not the absolutely fucking awful movie they're really talking about?

At first I was surprised that ~95% of the people at the Stand Up for Science rally have jobs directly impacted by the federal funding cuts, but then I remembered that most of the folks like me whose jobs aren't affected... are currently at those jobs.

Funny to have watched Oppenheimer on the big screen again on the day that the US president showed the world unequivocally that he is a Russian asset.

My actual favorite movie for several years and still a favorite.

Yesterday a colleague said we were "Blue-skying" in the sense of having wild ideas and I said "No that's called skeeting" and he believed me and now I'm terrified he's going to say that in a professional context not knowing.

Oh cool now I can tell @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social that two years ago I did a 2.5-hour live review review of The Anthropocene, Reviewed to a rapt 14-person audience in London. (10/10 book. Gave me an existential crisis.)

We've moved to the stage of grief where doomposting is allowed, right? I couldn't sleep. Here's my doompost. Sorry. This isn't the end of the world. But it is far worse than 2016. It will take decades to recover. ...And I can't say we had that time to spare. open.substack.com/pub/davekarp...

Being not a Stan at a K-Pop show is an utterly bizarre experience.

Played the role of Token White Guy Sitting Up Front for a comedian to keep pointing to during an event I attended that was mostly non-white. Weird! It was a weird feeling. Probably a lesson in that somewhere.

I've seen a lot of subpar comedy, but the only time I've ever put on a random comedian's HBO/Netflix/Whatever special and stopped mid-way was with Tony Hinchcliff's set in 2016. Just so deeply, painfully unfunny. Seems nothing has changed.

Just saw a green "Active" icon next to the name of a former classmate who passed away a couple months ago on Facebook. I'm sure it's his family monitoring the account, but jfc that's ghoulish.

this is not an informed opinion in any way but I kind of have this suspicion that the reason they are killing congestion pricing is because they know it will work and be popular and will lead to demand for restrictions on cars in cities

Plausibly the only major outlet I'll ever have had a byline at. Interning there back in 2013 was a huge thing for me and in years since it was really cool to say that I sometimes got to write about video games for The Daily Beast. I guess that won't be so cool anymore.

Whether it matters or not, it's cool that it happened.

Part of what makes me so irritated by this is that the Oppenheimer example is literally incorrect as well as being philosophically incorrect: there's no 4:3 version of the movie for viewing at home (and even if they had scenes crop in: having the "bigger" scenes be physically smaller would suck).

Any judge who allows a M&A to continue on the grounds that it will increase competition or whatever should be immediately vacated when evidence shows that it didn't do that.

People should be allowed to throw tomatoes at the Supreme Court justices every time they say something that undermines democracy.

They had a lot of ammo left after Uvalde. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can’t believe Taylor Swift put this song on her new album. Disgusting.

I've been watching Manhunt and wish we'd have some alternate histories of what if Lincoln hadn't been assassinated and Reconstruction had succeeded rather than what if the South had won.

Monkey Man is like The Raid 2 meets A Bittersweet Life with the politics of How to Blow Up A Pipeline. Absolutely phenomenal.

I didn't feel the earthquake and I feel so left out

I'm the only one I know who still wears a mask with any regularity and l've realized that some of it is a general refusal to let people forget that 2020 really happened.

Last night my girlfriend watched a true crime thing on Netflix and said "Huh, this series is just one really long episode" and I said "You mean a movie?" and she was embarrassed but I actually think it spoke to the way streaming has really erased the line between these things. It's all the same now.

Madam Web is truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen but even so I felt bad for the folks in the theater who couldn't find joy in some of the worst ADR I've ever heard telling a corpse "I guess it's good that you didn't know that tonight was the night you were going to die." I mean. Come on.

Now the only thing keeping this website from being successful is our horrible horrible personalities

in a sane world the Israeli PM yelling FUCK THE HAGUE, NO ONE CAN STOP US FROM DOING WAR CRIMES! would dispel a lot of people's delusions about what's going on

I got Spotify to give all my listening data for 2023, and it's always pretty eye opening... like the fact that I listened to Jaden Hossler's cover of Romantic Homicide 319 times between December 8 and 31... and that I actually listened to my #1 song 669 times for the year, not 386.

When the enormity of the world's horrors makes you feel helpless, narrow your focus. Find one stranger and scold them for posting a recipe while kids are dying. Call out a new mom for not adding alt text to a baby photo. Critique a selfie. Correct a joke. Show people you care more than them.

In the East Village just walked by an old woman who said to her husband, "Really it's only the authoritarian left that's affected my life." Happy 2024 folks!
