Full-time dad, husband, & professor at Weber State in an endless quest for the perfect model to manage blood sugar and cook paella at 1500 m. Too economist to be a historian. Too historian to be an economist. Missing home, wherever that is. My views (duh)

I somehow missed Branko Milanovic is here! @brankomilan.bsky.social

My new goal in life is having my Econ department being renamed “Department of Mathematical Psychics”

A generation of research and development workers—slashed America’s ability to innovate, compete, and attract the best and brightest—diminished Not ‘savings’, not ‘efficiency’, just reckless cutting, no impact analysis Our Congress has the power reverse this destruction. But chooses to fuel it

Today, my daughter understood what Amber alerts are. Sometimes seeing the discovery of the world is painful and heartbreaking.

“a former Tesla engineer appointed as the director of the Technology Transformation Services (…) has requested “privileged access” to 19 different I.T. systems reportedly without even completing a background check, making him less vetted than the person delivering pizza to that mine.”

News: Fox lost

We are all Przeworski

Deeply concerning, I guess

I am keeping a diary of daily events, as they unfold open.substack.com/pub/adamprze... It is available to everyone. I am new to Substack, so please let me know if something is wrong with the link or the file.

Please stop saying it saved money until you understand the value of what was cut. They are downsizing, and if the stuff getting cut had real value, its not a saving.

I wrote about Elon Musk and Gavin Kliger and acknowledging the reality of what they are: Nazis.

I like the trust in process questions but I worry about that first one giving a veneer of legitimacy to Musk undermining Congressional allocated money. That isn’t something to trust or not trust. It is not something he has the power to do legally.

Now that musk is saying he’s doing the DOGE stuff “because the globalists have plotted a Great Replacement in which they use government handouts to buy votes from illegal immigrants and urban blacks” maybe we don’t have to act like this is about deficits or cost cutting anymore

I keep seeing takes like this marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevo... 1. I don't like the status quo on policy X 2. Trump is thoughtlessly blowing things up, including on policy X 3. It might turn out better after being blown up so 🤷 We're on the road to authoritarianism, not your preferred policy.

It’s amazing how smart people like Ezra Klein fail to see the significance of the Eric Adams case. In an operational democracy, it would indeed be a disaster for the president; in our current autocratic logic, it could very well make Trump stronger.

Posting here a thread by Stathis N. Kalyvas, who is not yet in BlueSky:

Tell the MAGA base their leader is quoting a French guy

Guys, it’s time for some game theory

the FT is the only one really reporting in any meaningful way that these guys are all nazis

Not that anyone cares but a bunch of senior doj officials resigning over a corrupt instruction to drop a case was what triggered the Nixon impeachment, and in the Trump era it's just the 2pm scandal of a random Thursday and every day now has ~3 such scandals that would have ended any prior admin

It's going to be a long four years, especially if we make ourselves insane misreading budget documents. This is a story where multiple things are true at the same time and it's a warning about how we consume information going forward gizmodo.com/the-400-mill...

“Efficiency” requires some sort of reference output or objective function. E.g., “self-enrichment”

This is despicable. Only (very minor) silver lining I see: maybe it marginally increases the chances of women keeping their last name after getting married. I still find it weird that your identity changes after marriage.

I look at democracy data for a living, and the US indeed seems to be in a constitutional crisis right now - but this move by Polity makes me take it less seriously, not more. Here’s why:
