Happy daylight savings time, #nicar25! If you're up and at 'em, this is a great time to come learn some R. I'll be hanging out through the first two sessions (Intro to R and RStudio, Data Analysis and Plotting) and teaching the third (Gathering and Cleaning Data). #rstats

This is the part that’s breaking me

The teaching advanced data journalism panel at #nicar25 has gotten around to the topic of students not having an organizational system for their files. @dwillis.bsky.social saying he will have to teach an 'intro to computers' class. Does anyone have this course? How do you make it interesting/fun?

Interesting to read about the connection between my institution and the Selma to Montgomery march. news.stthomas.edu/tales-from-t...

Looking for the answer to a piece of stats trivia/history-- why is it called the "t" distribution? (In other words, it could be named any other letter or word, why t?)

To be clear, it's not a mistake that grants to train special ed teachers were cancelled. MAGA absolutely considers those to be verboten "DEI," and Silicon Valley considers them contrary to their eugenics project.

Does anyone have a minimal csv editor they like? I know I had one on my old computer, but I can't remember the name and now it seems like there are several! Sort of #rstats -adjacent.

I really really need you guys to make a conscious rejection of generative AI tools part of your ongoing political resistance. Don't use ChatGPT. Turn off Gemini. Don't read the AI results forced upon you at the top of Google search. Don't use AI art generators or support anyone who does. Please.

@boonerang.bsky.social Happy birthday! Without Instagram/Facebook, I have to give you a public shoutout :)

Extremely disappointed to see HHMI decide to kill their Inclusive Excellence program, including terminating the current IE3 awards to over a hundred institutions effective this year in the middle of a 6-year grant. I was hoping HHMI (and other private funders) would continue to lead the way.

I want to spell out the basic reason it’s so dangerous for Elon to have control of the U.S. payments system. It may seem like a technical matter, but the dynamics are simple. 1/x

Arguably the biggest national security breach in U.S. history. Private employees downloading personnel data on every federal employee and tax and social security data on every American onto private unsecured servers. Needless to say, completely illegal and subject to major prison sentences.

Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

This is very good. And timely, and it inspires action. You should read it. www.effaff.com/hope-despair... #datavix 📊

Poshmark, the next in the line of companies tacking "AI" onto anything and everything. I'm trying to buy less new stuff, but I'm no longer buying used things from Poshmark.

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"

I was just on a Zoom call and rediscovered this old background image while looking through my collection. I don't recall where I found it,¹ but of course, h/t @kcg.bsky.social. See quote post for context. ___ ¹ It might have been on @sglassmeyer.bsky.social's timeline.

any of my data viz/journalist friends wanna move to minnesota and do journalism?? (i don’t work here i just want my friends to have jobs) www.minnpost.com/careers/2025...

I've created a calculator that gives you the right answer 80% of the time and I believe it will change the world

when humanity invented roomba we were at a fork in the road. it was a step towards a future where robots did our labor, giving time back to us to enrich our lives. then roomba mapped our houses and wifi networks and sold that data. the dark pathway. robert frost would never

The art sleds in this thread are incredible to watch!

Why is everything AI now?! LinkedIn has opted everyone in to training AI on their data and content. I'm not a huge LinkedIn fan, but it's one of my few remaining social networking sites. Here's the direct link to turn it off: www.linkedin.com/mypreference...

Doing my best to get away from FAANG companies (do we still call them that?) so I'm moving from Goodreads to @thestorygraph.com. I must not be the only one with that idea!

Only saying once on bsky b/c I know it is not entirely useful, but it is totally exhausting that in 2016 some of us said “they’re Nazis,” some of us screamed “they’re segregationists,” and a whole lot of very serious people now posting about them being Nazis and segregationists gaslight us for years

Hey @posit.co, since we're talking about conferences I see that the 2025 Posit Conference is scheduled for Georgia. Georgia is marked "low" on the LGBTQ equality map www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps and "hostile" on the abortion access map reproductiverights.org/maps/abortio...

Hey @amstatnews.bsky.social, I know it's expensive to move a conference, but it can be done. We need conferences to be places where everyone can go as safely as possible. This means (at minimum) states with protections for LQGBTQIA+ folks, and bodily rights for everyone.

Use Signal to talk about protests Use Signal to talk about your wordle score Use Signal to talk about abortion Use Signal to talk about your mom's knitting club Use Signal to talk about parties Use Signal to talk about gender affirming care Use Signal to talk about the weather Use Signal

I have printed up some Red Cards in languages commonly spoken by immigrants in my area www.ilrc.org/red-cards-ta... Everyone should know their rights. You don't have to open the door for ICE

Thinking of trans people today, the attacks and bigotry they'll endure over these years, and the failure of mainstream media and greater society to behave with decency and offer support to the marginalized. We must be brave, take action, and listen to those who ask for help, for the good of us all.
