We are speedrunning the Declaration of Independence, folks.

And now they have come for #umass (it was only a matter of time). #academia #fascism

We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again

The great reach of higher education is also a huge vulnerability. Both as an experience and an institution it’s encountered most intimately by lots of people when young adults and again as parents. And rarely in either case can they appreciate it as an industry that requires expertise to operate.

As an academic I’ve gotta say I’m done with Columbia since they’re capitulating to fascism and selling the rest of us out. Not assigning any books from their press, not inviting any scholars from there to visit, not contributing to their publications for the indefinite future, etc.

Seven of my colleagues and friends at Columbia Law have written a compelling (and, in my view unanswerable) response to the unprecedented Title VI demand letter that the Trump administration recently sent to Columbia University: balkin.blogspot.com/2025/03/a-ti...

BREAKING: Hundreds of Jews and allies have taken over Trump Tower chanting “We want justice, you say how. Bring Mahmoud home now!” and “Fight Nazis, not students.” The civil disobedience is spawned by the ICE arrest of Palestinian student Mahmoud Khalil.

Like the spoiled children of the rich who squander their unappreciated legacies, a vast swath of Americans are taking for granted the hard-earned freedoms and rule of law that made us a rich and powerful nation. If we are not careful we will lose our inheritance forever.

As a former Fulbright Scholar (in Chile), I personally understand how terrifying this is. U.S. citizens around the world & foreign nationals in the U.S. — all Fulbright Scholars — have now had their incomes eliminated & are stranded. DOGE is an illegal, criminal operation that must be shut down.

DEI initiatives are still legal. Universities need to stand their ground. A Friday gift to your university's General Counsel Office - courtesy of an all star lineup of civil rights lawyers and scholars. You're going to want to read this.

One thought on the #Trump admin’s efforts to devastate higher ed by slashing #NIH (and #NSF) overhead: major public R1s that depend on this funding and will face massive budget shortfalls without it should simply suspend their athletics programs because they can no longer afford them…1/

Rising seas are submerging tribal land along the Gulf Coast. One tribe is building protective reefs out of bags of recycled oyster shells.

Compared to 2017, it feels like most of the institutions we count on to protect democracy are weaker now. The courts. The media. The Democratic Party. One institution, however, is *without doubt* in a stronger position to fight fascism now than in 2017: the American labor movement. Consider...

Pleased to announce that my book manuscript is officially under contract with University of Texas Press. There’s still a lot of writing and revising to do but this feels like a major milestone! #anthropology #development #patagonia #aquaculture #fishingcommunities

A classic materialist reading here is that 2020 gave American tech executives their first real taste of worker militancy, and it scared them so much that they decided they needed to move into the political sphere to crush it.

www.nenc.news/nenc/2025-01... My students often ask what kinds of aquaculture are most environmentally sustainable. It’s complicated but a good rule is the lower the species is on the “food chain” the better it is to farm (so kelp and oysters > shrimp and salmon). #aquaculture #sustainability

The folks at @cornellupress.bsky.social shared the cover art for my book and made my week. "Welcome to Soylandia" is coming soon. Check it out! www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501...

Pretty exciting to be cited (and summarized!) in the Annual Review of Anthropology. And in such good company too! #anthropology #fishing #Chile #oceangovernance doi.org/10.1146/annu...
