An excellent and easy-to-follow thread on how scientific discovery took us from studying nerve impulses in giant squid axons to a groundbreaking non-addictive pain medication. Well worth your time. 👇

Hello. If you are a prospective (or current) graduate student, or a faculty member or administrator, seeing federal cuts/policies impact graduate school admissions, funding, or operations, I would be interested in speaking with you: [email protected] Signal ibogost.47

More Friday night villainy: many NIH grant opportunities that disappeared two weeks ago and then reappeared last week have now disappeared again 🤬 Search grants.gov with close date in ascending order - 2 pages with closing dates now today (2/21/25), many with archive date tomorrow (2/22/25)

It’s okay to want to preserve jobs in your profession. That’s what the US political class tells us all of the time. It’s what numerous professions and job sectors assert constantly. So don’t be afraid to defend our job sector, academic scientists.

Excellent thread, but damn this seems bleak.

NEW: The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep funding frozen at the NIH - a move that some legal scholars say is illegal. Federal Register notices are blocked, so no grant-review sessions can be scheduled. All the gritty details here, and a short 🧵: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Regarding CSR Study Sections: SROs are apparently being told that their communication to their valued reviewer colleagues must be: "The xxxx meeting will be rescheduled for a later date, yet to be determined. Thank you for the time you've invested in the reviews. Signed by CSR SRO" Please be kind

Exactly this!

Professors please pull up a chair. I’ve been talking to my classes about what has been going on. I explained indirect costs to them. I talked to them about what a probationary employee is in the government. At the end of class they asked if we could talk about it more. (1/)

This is a key point. Accomplished scientists gave up their own research and security on the promise that if they worked hard, they could have a career fostering great science for others on behalf of us all. We’re breaking that promise with no recourse for them. 🧪 #AcademicSky

Pretty sad. Just got the email that CZI is canceling the second round of Diversity Leadership Awards. Private industry will definitely not fill the hole that NIH and NSF are leaving. 😢💔

Good story on all the carnage with quotes from @aaas.org CEO Sudip Parikh. www.science.org/content/arti...

I was supposed to have an NIH study section (KEDD) tomorrow, but it was "postponed TBD" today at 3 PM Eastern. Yesterday, individuals who were going to travel for the in-person meeting were told not to travel. Just confirming firsthand that the madness continues.

The Program Officer of my R01 to be discussed next month was just fired. FIRED. She was going to send me a feedback on a Specific Aims page, but sorry, she was fired. If you are a scientist in the US and haven't gone nuts or lost you mind by know, you are completely delusional.

Special shout out this AM to NIH 🧪 grant mgmt specialists, POs, and SROs during this chaotic time - THANK YOU for caring for our grants and uploading scores/summary statements despite the unprecedented challenges you may be facing. You are science warriors and we APPRECIATE & SUPPORT YOU 🫶

How many 5-alarm fires do we need before something is done about Musk?!

Approximately 10% of the NIH staff were fired yesterday. Barely anyone outside of the scientific community noticed, and I'd wager a sizeable number of NIH funded PIs have no idea either.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

Update shared by collaborator. Good news! Many diversity grants, including the F31, are listed again, and they no longer show as expired. They are open for now pending the outcome of the court cases. grants.nih.gov/funding/nih-...

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

Not sure how many realize that NIH funding is still frozen. This article details an almost complete dropoff (97%) in NIH funding between Feb3-10 this year and last. Our institution's numbers are consistent with those cited here. If yours are as well, please share! popular.info/p/trump-main...

Imagine if @aoc @sanders.senate.gov , every dem, SIMULTANEOUSLY held Town Halls where they allowed grant and contract recipients to explain to the country what it is they do and why it's important Invite all media. Including RW podcasters. @spaces Flood the zone Call it a Day Of Transparency

BREAKING NEWS Court issued a NATIONWIDE TRO in the action brought on behalf of the AAMC, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Association for Schools and Programs of Public Health, the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals, and the Greater New York Hospital Association.

Oh, this is huge! Anyone out there with students whose F31 applications have been blanked in era commons, can you check the status? How broad of a reversal is this? Also, if you have had other grants with diversity components blanked, could you also check? Thank you in advance!

HEADS UP: ALL INDIVIDUALS WITH ACTIVE DIVERSITY-RELATED AWARDS (ANY MECHANISM) It occurred to me while out walking that it might be worth asking your PO about an extension to allow you time to apply to a non-diversity award. I don't know what the answer will be, but it is worth the ask.

F99/R00 AND K99/R00 DIVERSITY AWARD APPLICANTS If you have applied for a F99/R00 or K99/R00 Diversity award and the study section for review is not listed on your eRA Commons page, please reach out to me. DM me, email [email protected], Signal jeremymberg.78 THANK YOU

Some of these societies not only had nothing to say until the IDC cut, they deleted their diversity related content until getting shamed...
