Thank you for this.
I had 2 separate therapists tell me to be "grateful" and I immediately felt worse as I thought "are you telling me I feel this wretched because I'm just ungrateful?"
I wish I'd challenged them now, but it was many years ago and I didn't feel strong enough to at the time.

I taught myself to touch-type aged 9 after a family friend who was clearing out her attic gave me an old metal typewriter and a lesson book from the 1950s.
I remember so much force was needed to press each key, compared to a PC keyboard!
I've found touch-typing to be a really useful skill.

I very much agree.
I used to have excellent care coordinators, but this was nearly 20 years ago, before my area adopted the 'recovery' model and booted them out, and discharged many of their patients en masse.
The care coordinators helped me we with so many aspects of life and safety.

If the government passes the buck back to employers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled employees, a proportion of employers will simply and quietly decide they'd rather not bother, and hire someone else

Like you don't have to call people scammers, anyone who is poor or destitute is completely allowed to crowdfund something you don't see as necessary; a scammer is someone who lied about their needs, not a poor girl asking for pizza when literally breathing makes her spine hurt. Like fuck off.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.
It's sad to hear that the experience is not uncommon. Hopefully one day, society will be more understanding of those with BFRBs.

I very much relate to having limited ability to mask.
I fully acknowledge that masking can be highly detrimental to mental health, but on a selfish note, there have been many times I've been discriminated against which might not have happened had I been able to mask temporarily.

I completely agree and, as an autistic and Mad, have experienced have experienced this in the past.

Hi, sorry, I've only just seen that I never replied!
Sorry.
I'm not too bad today, thanks. A friend is popping round a bit later so I'm just trying to get the place looking decent.
There's the final of a tennis tournament on this afternoon, so I plan to watch that.
How are things with you?

Thanks.
I was really grateful to the two police officers there. One went to check if the man was still around, the other walked with me to the platform and saw me on to the train safely.
This happened in a busy city and I go there as infrequently as possible now, particularly if I am on my own.

I'm AuDHD and generally find myself running late.
Although, occasionally, I overcompensate and end up ridiculously early.

I really need to hear this.
I'm not as intellectually 'quick' as many of the other autistic people I have known or met, and it does get me down as I feel inferior.

A male stranger once punched me at a train station.
Scary.
Inexplicably and illogically, the first word out of my mouth was "sorry".
(Thankfully, he rapidly left the station afterwards. There was a police desk at the station so I was able to get them to support me.)

Disgusting and scary that people who clearly know f***-all about the reality of mental illness can spread these views and actually be taken more seriously than mentally ill people themselves.
I'm so sick of the downgrading of mental illness to something trivial and dismissible.

Hi Marla, I really like this article.
I was wondering if there is any research or writing about people (such as myself) who have been repeatedly shamed by others for having BFRBs?
I was persistently shamed by a parent, both during doing my BFRBs and in public.
Would this exacerbate BFRBs?
Thanks

Hi, this talk sounds really interesting!
Will it be recorded at all?
(I won't be able to watch it live, sadly, due to work.)
Thanks

Sounds good!
I had rooms painted for the first time last year following the landlord finally doing damp works I'd asked for back in 2010!
I had to get a professional to do it, but he was a friend of my support worker so didn't take the p*ss with how much he charged.
Felt good to get it sorted.
