Dear media, please stop saying AI is “training” on copyrighted works. AI is “stealing” copyrighted works. It is “plagiarizing” copyrighted works. It is “breaking multiple laws.”

for the Monday crowd: my first book, Stitch, Unstitch: Modernist Poetry and the World of Work, is now up on the Columbia UP site, with a gorgeous cover and gorgeous (and too-generous) blurbs. Out this August and pre-orderable from May! @columbiaup.bsky.social cup.columbia.edu/book/stitch-...

Happy publication day to this beauty! Congratulations, @franciscondine.bsky.social! 🩷📕🩷

honestly wild to me that, at this late date, any ostensibly informed person would insist that we could ignore trump’s words as just bluster

Americans (myself included) tend to laugh off the Trump noises about annexing Canada as obvious nonsense, but the rest of the world is taking the threat seriously. Our media should reflect that reality and hold him accountable for the serious damage he’s causing.

Montreal friends!! Two weeks from today, March 20th, I’ll be in concert with the great poet Liz Howard & the wonderful scholar Carmen Faye Mathes about my new book, Here Is a Figure! This will be at the Rocket Science Room, 5-7 pm—hope to see you there!!

Republicans in Congress are reportedly asking Musk’s permission to hold votes

ProPublica looked into science grants that Ted Cruz's team flagged as "radical" and "neo-Marxist" and, uh. This would be good comedy if it didn't matter so much www.propublica.org/article/ted-...

OMFG

Sadly, it’s time to revive this 2017 TIME cover.

Isabelle Huppert’s message: while you’re alive, be alive, act alive, don’t prematurely imitate death: seize your own animation: mobilize your nerves and your memories: pay strict attention to the pulse of the present moment: never fake it

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

RFK really missed the simplest lesson of LBJ’s career, try not to get any kids killed if your name rhymes with “how many kids did you kill today”

Rip Pierre Joris. Probably the translator who influenced my own practice/thinking about translation the most.

I’m back baby, thanks again to @stuwatson.bsky.social & @kqandrews.bsky.social www.thenation.com/article/cult...

Show me two people with an insane beef:

A thing of beauty for February 25, 2025: "Vorhor, the Green Wave" (1896-7), egg tempera on canvas by Georges Lacombe.

A thing of beauty for February 23, 2025: "Peinture, 130 x 102 cm, 27 août 1986" (1986), oil on canvas, by Pierre Soulages.

POV: You're 16, believe being in advanced placement math class means you're a once in a generation genius, and have just discovered Reddit.

Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels haven't aged well. For example, Moonraker - published almost exactly 70 years ago in April 1955 - features a villain who's a super-rich industrialist and rocket-maker seeking to cause chaos because he's a secret Nazi. Such a silly idea!

The NYT, once again, provides free PR for this administration by reprinting their racist/fascist talking points -- rather than engaging in real journalism. This is why we must defend #FreedomtoLearn in K-12 so young people can read critically, spot the propaganda, & seek out independent media.

🗣️ @aoc.bsky.social out fighting for the people & federal workers: “Every day our job is to wake up and say ‘what can I do today?’ — There is no act too small. Every action matters.” 🇺🇸

Trump's DOJ has erased a report from its website that lays out its own recommendations for tackling violence against Indigenous women www.huffpost.com/entry/donald...

Reminder: we already paid for this. This is our tax $$ he’s trashing.

Thanks to The Academy of American Poets for featuring this interview with me about my new book, Out of the Blank, in their enjambments series! Sample poems in author link. poets.org/text/enjambm...

An hourly reminder that DOGE is not about Elon Musk cutting government money waste, it is about wasting more government money on Elon Musk. Here is Elon cutting NASA, a government agency that his private company competes with for federal funding. They aren't even bothering to hide the corruption.

Another way the dictatorship might kill you. This is from a friend who is a retired air traffic controller.

Everything old is new again!

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

There is literally HIV being transmitted from mom to baby because of the illegal shutdown of US AID and now Trump’s State Department wants to spend 400 million dollars on Tesla cyber trucks. This is not about efficiency. It’s a smash and grab.

There have been some truly awful and egregious headlines on Gaza in the New York Times over the past 16 months but we may have a winner, folks. ‘Gaza Development Plan’
