When David Brooks joined the conservative movement in the 1980s, there were two types of people: those who cared earnestly about ideas, and those who wanted only to shock the left. The reactionary fringe has won, Brooks writes.

"The U.S. Government has no legal authority to snatch a person who is lawfully present in the U.S. off the street and remove him from the country without due process. The Government’s contention otherwise, and its argument that the federal courts are powerless to intervene, are unconscionable."

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

Good news in NYC. Already among the safest big US cities, in the first 3 months of 2025 we had only 63 murders, the 2nd fewest ever recorded. And 140 shootings, the fewest since NYPD stats started in 1994. On the subway system crime fell 18% and nobody was killed for the first time since 2018.

Yesterday, TX Rep. Keith Self (R) quoted Nazi Joseph Goebbels on controlling public opinion🤬 Using Nazi propaganda is more than vile; it’s a flashing red siren. This is how democracy dies: not with a bang, but with silence in the face of fascist rot. America, do not be silent. Call out evil.

I'm currently reading an MA dissertation on dyeing techniques, which is very interesting. I was particularly struck by the point that one challenge to recreating historical dyes is that the recipes rely on the use of urine, & we simply cannot know the chemical components of the piss of the past.
