oh wow, 5 tile hands... you could teach a child with this approach

you would teach only a handful of beginner yaku? i prefer to hand them the whole yaku cheat sheet and say "ignore the ones with kan in the name for now" and point out the common ones. itd be a waste not to entice them with the allure of the yakuman section

well you have to teach furiten otherwise no one will know how to defend! im assuming *some* baseline competence at hidden information strategy games otherwise i probably wouldn't bother teaching in the first place

but, if you're skipping over fu for teaching purposes, can you really justify including pinfu in the teaching game too? it can't be easy to internalize for a first game (especially the valueless pair part) and while it does nerf damaten, that shouldn't be a concern outside of Our Blessed Jade Room

then i remembered seeing that post about scoring without fu, although i have to wonder why not at least preserve the way hands double in value for each han (1000 2000 4000 mangan instead of 2000 4000 6000 mangan). yakuhai nomi being worth 2k feels like itd really mess things up

i think the easiest sell is to not teach kan until after east 1, or possibly even east 4 depending how they're feeling. that solves the classic "you need to explain that orphans is the only yaku that can rob a closed kan before you can even start" problem among other things

it is relllllatively safe since south has 2 bamboo in early discards, making a 1-4 wait less likely than others, but there are better answers in the other replies :)

east dealt tedashi 7 followed by tedashi 6 three separate times so i think we can rule out chanta (not that i pay that much attention to tedashi/tsumogiri outside of replays). so 9s is actually safe from everyone. but i do like the aesthetic of "deal in on purpose" being the answer :)

(in the moment, i forgot about all 4 1p being visible meant the 9s was safe into orphans, and dealt into the tanyao anyway... and if this weren't silver room, i wouldn't rule out a 9s tanki trap wait from south either...)

good reasoning all the way... with just one more thing i only realized in retrospect: because it's south 3, the riichi player gets all last deal, and looking at the scores, i think you actually want to deal into north's tanyao rather than let south win this hand and catch up

yeah i've had to unfollow a lot bc i don't want to turn off reposts of friends who do use it responsibly. utterly baffling ui choice to not have it
