These challenges — housing, affordability, climate resilience — aren’t new, but the urgency has never been greater. Californians are being priced out, rebuilding after disasters takes too long, and DC threatens our progress. We’re not here to tinker around the edges — we’re here to get real results.

💰 Protecting CA’s Budget With federal funding under threat, we’re making sure CA stays on track — protecting our social safety net, essential services, and the affordability measures families rely on.

🔥 Wildfire Recovery Communities devastated by historic wildfires can’t wait years to rebuild. We’re streamlining recovery efforts so homes can be rebuilt faster and more resiliently — because extreme weather events aren’t slowing down.

✂️ Cutting Red Tape In 2023, it took an average of 523 days to approve new housing in SF. That’s unacceptable. We’re bringing forward a permitting reform package that cuts red tape, speeds up construction, and makes it easier to build the homes Californians need.

🏠 Fast-tracking Housing California makes it too hard to build. We’re fighting for funding for affordable housing and calling into question some sacred cows in CA politics. Housing costs shouldn’t force families out of the communities they call home.

We refuse to let the chaos and cruelty from the White House threaten the well-being of our residents. This legal defense fund is California’s decisive stand against federal overreach, ensuring we remain a beacon of justice and equality.

The recent actions by Trump & his Republican allies are a direct assault on the people and values of California, an assault that is as morally reprehensible as it is unconstitutional. Their reckless attempts to undermine our state's economy and target vulnerable communities will not go unanswered.

Her legacy of fighting for access to safe and legal abortions for millions of woman in this country will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to her entire family. RIP, Cecile. Our fight continues in your memory.

CEQA and other permitting regimes, once envisioned as protections for our environment, have morphed into obstacles for meeting our housing and climate goals. This is a perfect opportunity for us to exercise broader permitting reform in the face of our new climate reality.

Overall, I commend the Governor for presenting a balanced budget under challenging circumstances. I look forward to working closely w/him & my colleagues in the months ahead to strengthen this proposal, & ensure we meet the urgent needs of Californians.

I also know this is the beginning of the process, & will continue to advocate for restored general fund dollars in the final budget. The housing bond I’m reintroducing will provide critical funding for affordable housing - but that money won’t be available until 2027.

While I’m encouraged by this range of commitments, I’m also concerned that there are no general fund dollars allocated for affordable housing. After years of meaningful investments, proposed funding in this budget has dropped to the minimum levels required by law.

Finally, I’m heartened to see a critical keyword highlighted dozens of times throughout the budget: affordability. This word needs to be top of mind for all of us this year. As Approps chair, I will view every bill that comes through my committee with an affordability lens.

I also want to thank the Governor for including $30 million to support California journalism. I look forward to partnering with legislators and the journalist community in the months ahead to ensure this investment is well spent.

I’m also encouraged by the Governor’s proposed reorganization to create a new Housing & Homelessness Agency. It will help ensure more accountability and enhance our ability ro resource communities better who are trying to build housing.

I'm grateful to the Governor for identifying the entitlement process as a barrier to building housing – an issue that comes up repeatedly in my Select Committee on Permitting Reform. We must reduce costs, increase accountability, & remove barriers to development.
