#InvertebrateParenthood One of my favorite encounters ever, this lovely Hamataliwa helia mum, and some of her newly-hatched miniatures at her feet 🥹

Guess what time of year it is in my yard 👀

WISDOM!!! #birds news.mongabay.com/short-articl...

Every Winter ends.

✨New Waspaganda✨ Despite their demonization, Vespid wasps are hardworking ladies who work together to get it done & fulfill their niche (pollinating, hunting, defending). I believe they are powerful symbols for worker resistance & deserve more respect. Get it: Lindzeamays.com/printshop 🐡🕷️🐝🌱

P is for Patagurus, a hermit crab known from only ONE SPECIMEN EVER! Instead of a snail shell, it wears a bivalve to cover its tiny abdomen. Is this how hermit crabs gave up their houses in carcinization? 🤔 (see king & coconut crabs, ALSO hermits) #CrabAZ 🦀🧪🦑 www.biotaxa.org/Zootaxa/arti...

I think my best macro photography was with the Canon MP-E 65mm lens. Look at the glorious detail in this shot. It makes me want to bust that lens out of retirement. Tiger Fly (Coenosia sp.) Pennsylvania

He’s a speed bump in your doom scrolling. There’s still wonderful things in the world. Take the moments to enjoy them.

I was remiss in my squirrel duties on this morning and Ever Present, the squirrel, let me know. I don't have access to outside power so have to keep this birdbath clear with fresh water daily. Happy to say a few hours later the birdbath had clean fresh water and no snow/ice. #mammals

Native prairie plant valentines for your friday I originally made these for www.plantlovestories.com ages ago!

Dear everyone who rolls up in my comments when I’m talking about something that is not The Current Chaos, berating me that There Are More Important Things to Be Thinking About, please, and I say this with love, fuck all the way off into the sun, I will do as I please, unfollow me if it bothers you.

Citronella ant (Lasius) tends to her mealybugs, yesterday in eastern San Diego county for some reason, this reminds me of the scene in Toy Story, when Sid goes to Pizza Planet and plays the crane game. "I have been chosen ..."

The adorable newborn tapir calf is already mastering the art of wiggling its tiny trunk. 🥰 Baby tapirs use their tiny trunks for sniffing, exploring, and even grasping small objects. Their trunks are an extended upper lip and nose, which helps them sense their surroundings and forage as they grow.

The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943. Only one cat has ever received the award. This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25

G is for Geosesarma. Popular pets, some species were/are exploited by the aquarium trade before being described. Each has a small range in SE Asia, traversing freshwater and land. They hatch as minicrabs instead of larvae, and the mom keeps them safe for a few weeks! #CrabAZ 🦀🧪🦑

🚨UNRELEASED BABY SNOWY PLOVER VIDEO!! I didn't even know I had this! Don't scroll away, Plover A runs into Plover B. DOUBLE THE PLOVER!!! 🪶

NEW JWST IMAGE SHOWING A PROTOPLANETARY DISK AROUND A NEWLY FORMED STAR!!! 🤩

Here is a timelapse of an aurora to cleanse your timeline.

Here. Have a baby flamingo.

Check out this camo! It took me a minute to find the eyes and the abdomen and connect all the parts. Read the alt text for extra hints. Amazing! #inverts

The gig economy is hard when you're barely 4 inches tall

For your consideration: the tiniest known jumping spider (Neonella camillae of course), spooding around excitedly 🖤

Muskrats are cute wetland mammals that build burrows in the banks of ponds and streams. They have webbed hind feet for swimming and can stay under water for over 10 minutes. 🦊

It’s dangerous to go alone, take this. #MothMonday

Semi-regular reminder: Baby open-ocean octopuses sometimes ride on jellyfish like little hats. 📸 Songda Cai bit.ly/2ZmNZZH 🧪🪼🐙🦑🌿

Venus fly traps are found only in a sliver of the Carolina’s and no place else on earth. They are specialists in these rapidly declining habitats. I wonder how common and how diverse they would have been a thousand years ago. It was a little bit magic to find a few wild, healthy, and eager for bugs

Does planting a small patch of native wildflowers make a difference? Yes, it absolutely does. Studies have shown over and over again that it really helps. And that help matters because once a species is extinct, it’s gone for good Now is the time to make a plan for spring!

In case anyone is in need of some Cute I bring you the Tufted Titmouse. It's me, I'm in need of the cute #birds 🌿

I hiked up the north side of Squak Mountain in the Issaquah Alps this morning when it was 28°F and found the MOTHER OF ALL HAIR ICE. Look at this beauty!! This is by far the most perfect hair ice I've ever found. For those who missed my last hair ice post, this is caused by fungus in the wood.

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts. The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails. The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

Did someone say it's #mothmonday? How about N. America's largest species, Hyalophora cecropia or Cecropia moth. Click the photo for full view. This is a living specimen. This is a female and they are enormous. #insect #bugsky #invert #macro #macrophotography #sciart #nature #wildlife #photography

On this morning’s walk, a Morpho butterfly (my very favorite) found the plants by the road very interesting. They’re usually difficult to photograph, but he was meandering down low so I could video his iridescent blue. 🦋🪲 #BugSky #NatureSky #CostaRica #Butterfly

We're having a discussion about which interesting animal behaviour would be terrifying on a different species. The rules are a) it can't be an immediate danger to you b) it has to be so scary you would stop filming and leave. Feel free to play along. The current winner is vulture murmuration.

I'm contractually obligated to regularly post this picture of the smallest known jumping spider species in the world (Neonella camillae) on the head of a pin; so, here we are. #EmotionalSupportSpood Goodnight y'all 🖤

This is a timelapse I created at our annual astronomy club's star stare in 2023. #astrophotography, #milkyway, #colorado

Bit of Goosanders diving to hopefully improve your evening - Filmed at EWT Abberton last winter #EssexBirding #Birds #UKWildlife #birding

Another Caddisfly larva feeding, this time on a more typical food, scraping algae/biofilm off a dead leaf Pretty sure this is Limnephilidae #Pondlife #BugSky #UKWildlife #inverts #Insect #Caddisflies

Non-binary trans person here, with the bilateral gynandromorph amazon ant (Polyergus longicornis alate/worker) I found - and which I really, really need in tattoo form 🖤

Here is a photo of a trans non-binary biologist (me) holding a bird (Eastern Towhee) that is likely a bilateral gynandromorph-- a fusion of cells with female-type chromosomes and cells with male-type chromosomes in one bird! Biological sex and human gender diversity is real and wonderful ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

Jagged ambush bug is absolutely ready for spring. Early bug gets the snack(s)

For #SquirrelAppreciationDay please take a moment to recognize all the Squirrel Moms out there who hang by their toenails while maneuvering squirmy toddlers like that’s just a regular thing Moms do😄
