Tons of data shows that even if you experience no symptoms whatsoever, just being exposed to heat for prolonged periods - like job shifts - leads to things like kidney disease, heart disease, permanent disabilities, and early death. Temperatures are up & so are heat injuries, & NIOSH has been gutted

Pedestrian & cycling fatalities have risen quickly in the US. But impacts vary. Our new research on Boston shows that: —Traffic injury rates are 4x higher in communities of color than largely white areas. —People of color experience much higher traffic injury rates *outside* of their home areas.

it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

So the guy leading RFK Jr.'s vaccine-autism study? A total quack who was previously charged for practicing medicine without a license for using chemical castration drugs on autistic children.

"Angry, disappointed, frustrated"--Scientists were making progress on vaccines and antivirals for the next pandemic--until this week, when the Trump administration abruptly told them to stop. Here's my story with @apoorvanyt.bsky.social Gift link: nyti.ms/43Xz77q

If Rumeysa Ozturk is brave enough to write that op-ed calling for divestment when she’s here on a visa and ICE is being politically weaponized, you as a citizen can be brave enough to write one too. Check out The Op-Ed Project for help crafting and pitching your piece. www.theopedproject.org

Liberals and progressives are the only ones with any agency, according to most political discourse. You *never* hear about a conservative need to understand liberals. It’s always on the left to fix things.

RFK Jr’s anti-vax organization has created a fake CDC website that posts dangerous misinformation about vaccines. Misinformation kills. And puts children in the hospital. And wipes out their immune systems. infoepi.substack.com/p/cdc-clone-...

The crush of new grant cancellations hasn't let up. If your grant was terminated (or your app was pulled) please use this Google Form👇 to submit details for tracking purposes. Multiple advocacy efforts are moving forward, but we must must must know more about what grants were cancelled and why.

This made me cheer. It gets directly at a problem I’ve often noticed: people don’t fundamentally understand what a historian *does*.

New working paper out today with @epiellie.bsky.social called "Do LLMs Act as Repositories of Causal Knowledge?" Can LLMs (ie ChatGPT) build for us the causal models we need to identify an effect? There are reasons to expect they could. But can they? Well, not really, no. arxiv.org/html/2412.10...

Chatbots don't *want* anything and don't *recognize* anything.

Fixed it!

ABC News layoffs got me! that means I’m back on the market for full-time role/freelance work doing journalism on all my fave topics: court cases, internet ephemera, national news, pop culture, crime, truly whatever gets the group chat popping. hit an unemployed gal up! DM/email in bio xoxo💋

I'm using #nvivo for the first time and coded a lot of selected areas in addition to regular text. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to view both types of content for a particular code—it just gives me weird numbers. Any guidance from #qualitative #research folks on here? #academicsky #phdlife

my “favorite” response to the weirdos saying that people don’t need psych meds and should be trying to get off of them is the ones like “well you wouldn’t say that about asthma or hypertension would you??” as if that’s a gotcha. like yes people have been saying that, did you forget about fatphobia

I’ve been in a particularly awful flare-up of symptoms over the past several weeks (for those who don’t know, I’ve been dealing with Long COVID & Friends for over a year now) and a silver lining is that I’ve been too sick to doomscroll, which I will absolutely celebrate!

I published a new oped in @statnews.com today, with other professors of law, medicine & public health. On settlement of the landmark US v. Gilead patent infringement case. We call for transparency & robust enforcement of public patent rights in the future. 🧵 1/ www.statnews.com/2025/02/12/h...

The announcement on exemptions to USAID/PEPFAR suspensions allowing continuation of HIV treatment and care interventions are very much a mirage. On the ground across Africa people living with HIV cannot access their medications. Deaths and new infections grow as we speak. apnews.com/article/hiv-...

i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!

So, so excited that this paper is finally out! As someone who detransitioned, gatekeeping didn’t help me. Instead it caused me many problems in the short & long-run but experiences like mine are often used to argue for more gatekeeping. I’m happy to help with a paper that challenges that narrative.

Braidwood v. Becerra is on its way to SCOTUS! Read my take on the case in the Cornell Law Review: www.cornelllawreview.org/2024/02/23/p...

My therapist recently stopped taking insurance and I decided to keep seeing them since I have good OON benefits. My first reimbursement was sent on 12/3 to my old address from ~2 years ago. When I called to follow-up, I was told I would have to wait 30 BUSINESS DAYS for them to reissue the check.

As I saw everyone’s year-end reading recaps, I realized I only read one semi-recreational (audio)book in 2024. That’s fine—I was busy becoming chronically ill—but it’s something I want to be more intentional about. I set a realistic goal of six books and joined @thestorygraph.com (follow me➡️CalebL).

Study finds claims of declines in maternal deaths after Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health appear to be driven by elevated levels of maternal death during the 2021 spike in COVID-19–related deaths--not because of changes after Dobbs. health policy policysky episky 🛟sociology demography medsky

I say this to anyone who will listen!! Insurance will deny claims that they absolutely should cover based on their own policies, in the hopes that people won’t bother appealing (if they even understand that they can) and will pay out-of-pocket instead. It’s cartoonishly evil behavior.

For no reason at all, I’m remembering this experience: in 2020, I was scheduled to have my hysterectomy—days after the election & at the onset of a massive covid surge. The day before, I got a call from the hospital that insurance denied the claim and they couldn’t possibly appeal overnight. 1/

Check out this scatterplot of health spending per capita (x axis) & life expectancy (y axis) in OECD countries (lines = averages). The United States sits alone in the bottom right area due to its very high spending rate and below-average life expectancy. More www.oecd-ilibrary.org/social-issue...

Program evaluations only seem to matter when they are done in a timely manner and by the institutions that hold the policy levers. Folks who overly simplify (or overvalue) the instrumental role of evidence-production viz consequentialism take note 👇🏽
