Tom Pepinsky offers some backgropund to *that* sermon. Well worth reading. tompepinsky.com/2025/01/22/w...

What can you even do about this. You can say the truth: Hitler murdered communists. His thugs beat & murdered the left in Germany. His bombs helped murder communists in Spain. He murdered communist in the states he occupied. But they don’t care, they don’t listen. They just keep lying.

The UK is one of Europe's most regionally unequal countries, with per capita spending in London far greater than areas like the East Midlands “There’s been a view that essentially you just keep expanding the already hot parts of the economy" Does the Treasury value regions enough to change that?

It's hard to see NATO surviving Trump's term if this is at all serious. As I said at the time, supposedly "pro-NATO" and "pro-Ukraine" British Conservatives supporting Trump were obviously deranged.

I think this should be shared widely.

Perfectly put.

Jess Phillips and Keir Starmer could get seriously rich if they wanted to take Musk to court… …for libel and quite possibly incitement to put their lives in danger.

Dave Walker in today's Church Times. Funny but, oh dear...

Happy about a social care review and I get that it would naturally take a long time. But I do not have confidence A) that Labour has the bravery to make the case for tax rises B) that the Tories have the decency to refrain from party political sabotage in 2028.

Good advice for almost any supposedly intractable problem

Perhaps I should add ... Being appointed to the HoL can be a job offer. Some people take the title and swan off to feel important, rarely or never engaging. Others of us see it as a crucial part of our current (very flawed) democratic process and work our socks off on improving poor legislation.

Things that are now woke: telling young girls they can have a career

Your 'doom quote' for today: "We can realize that all this talk about the fate of Earth has nothing to do with the planet's tolerance for higher temperatures and everything to do with our species' tolerance for self-delusion."

The essence of #JimmyCarter was his faith. His authentic Christianity shaped his politics and shaped the man.

After losing his election Trump could have eradicated disease. He could have helped the poor. Instead he led an insurrection and sold American secrets.

RIP Jimmy Carter - you were a deeply good man. ❤️

A sense of togetherness, peace and happiness that the singing of carols can bring | Ginny Smith

Today, we mourn the loss of a true American hero, President Jimmy Carter. A champion of human rights, urban renewal, and peace, his legacy will forever inspire.

Great article highlighting the importance of pluralism and independent journalism. 'The centerists cannot hold' bylinetimes.com/2024/12/23/t... @peterjukes.bsky.social

Channel crossing: 3 people have died & c.45 were given treatment on the beach, many suffering from hypothermia. 4 were taken to hospital - (But the mayor of Sangatte say 7 were treated in ICU) It has been the deadliest year on record with 77 people dying in 2024 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage said there would be no downsides to leaving the EU. What we got was a smaller economy, less trade, less choice, dearer food and clothing and more complex and more expensive travel. Let’s rejoin #ScottishIndependence bylines.scot/brexit/europ...

Reading a column from a Tory MP on the Fascists from the Mail in 1934... "There is no fundamental difference in outlook...Why should there not be concord and agreement between that old historic party... and this new virile offshoot?"

Most people know the Mail briefly supported the British Union of Fascists in 1934 ("Hurrah for the Blackshirts") but less well known is that Rothermere got all his papers to back them. The Sunday Dispatch ran a prize for the best letter on "Why I Like the Blackshirts".

“Brexit made the UK an early victim of this reactionary politics which, instead of making this country great again, has already made it poorer and lonelier. Who knows what further damage may be awaiting our younger generations.”

This makes complete sense.

This is insane. Citizens of Greenland are Danish & EU citizens. You cannot just invade nor buy them. It follows Trump saying he would invade Mexico, take the Panama canal and make Canada the 51st state of the US. This is not a president who wants world peace.

We're nearly at the first full calendar year-end of the Gaza war. The normalisation of both (i) the enormous bloodshed (ii) and journalists still not being allowed in by the Israeli govt to report as to what's happening have been some of the grimmer features of the year.

🔴 'Fiscal Nimbyism Makes It Far Harder to Fix Public Services' Fed by an irresponsible media, neither voters nor political leaders are willing to accept the trade-offs inherent in fiscal choices, writes @chrisgrey.bsky.social in a free preview of his monthly column in the Byline Times print edition

Last time unhinged amounts of not exactly clearly disclosed money flew to the UK, you got Brexit Maybe there's no need to emulate the 'let's do it twice!' USA on this one?

I’m old enough to remember Boris Johnson telling businesses Brexit paperwork could go in a bin. Now they need a warehouse to store it in

Keir Starmer has proposed that “safer streets” can be achieved by “more police on the beat”. He offered no break with the failed consensus about how to deal with anti-social behaviour, writes @davidallengreen.bsky.social. www.prospectmagazine...

Yes. Brexit should be in a museum for the backward looking. And this warehouse for a single company’s Brexit paperwork should be the physical representation of it. Every piece of paper representing the BREXITERS big fat “red tape” lies.

Samples from 23 river & lake swimming sites were found to contain levels of E. coli up to 20 times higher than would be deemed safe in 🇺🇸 ,as well as medicines used to treat diabetes & seizures Antibiotic-resistant infections ⬆️ ⬆️ with 66,730 last year v 62,314 in 2019. Most were caused by E. coli

CPTPP is as significant to the UK as the 0.08% GDP gain suggests. Fine but as those who have studied it further agree, lots of maybe / probably won'ts regarding the future e.g. for economic shifts, political tilts, new rules, big new members

As the Murdoch family drama finally spilled out into public, hundreds of editorial staff at the Guardian and Observer walked out on strike. Look closely and you can see two very different ideas of what journalism should be, writes @arusbridger.bsky.social. www.prospectmagazine...

Private healthcare is in the news a lot because of UnitedHealth. I have written a book about how politicians have been decimating the NHS and enabling privatisation to infiltrate the service. The Telegraph review of it was pretty negative (!), but readers have given it a 4.6/5 ⭐️ review on Amazon..

“wealthy billionaires and corporations… hoard land as an asset, Britain now having among the highest concentrations of land ownership in the world. Half of England is owned by less than 1% of its population.”

My daughter is doing her masters now but with Erasmus she could have had the option to study abroad for a year as an undergrad. My sister benefited from a year in Grenada in 1994 & because of it she’s fluent in Spanish. It’s tragic that our children can’t benefit as we once did.
