Waiting with my 17 year old so she can donate platelets! She has been feeling helpless about the state of the world and her school counselor suggested this as a way to feel empowered.

Queer kids need to have access to books that celebrate their lives and value their existence. Queer kids need to know that these books exist. Banning books is not about books. Banning books is about the erasure of identities. The nazis banned books. Erasure is the precursor to eliminationism.

A reminder for these times.

When we drive, we take in and decode words via podcasts or audiobooks or just talking. Self-driving cars will just create more time for screens. Another nail in literacy’s… I won’t say coffin, but definitely its health.

Today, in a meeting at the White House, the only person actually defending American interests was Zelenskyy. Let that sink in.

I think I am finally renewing my social life! The wheels fell off during the pandemic, &then my dad died,& then I was in autoimmune hell. Time and meds, man. They work.

you wouldn't believe the number of messages we receive from bots beginning 'Hi, The!'

Vibing with these yellow earrings today 😻

5yo (as we eat lunch at a Taco Bell): *pensively* Daddy…are there TWO restaurants called Taco Bell?

It’s probably futile to find first-hand accounts of digital minimalism online, right?

4) Would anyone find detox notes helpful? Maybe via Substack?

3) I feel like my brain works better— more creatively, with deeper and more frequent original insight— away from digital noise. But I am definitely addicted.

2) Have you tried a screen/phone-free trial? How was it for you?

1) Trying to imagine what it might look like to live a screen-free, phone-free life outside of work. Seriously contemplating it.

She is, quite literally, Cassandra

Besides @altnps.bsky.social, where else are you getting your news-behind-the-news, everyone? I need to read. It’s part of how I figure out next steps.

Okay, pardon us, but F this. America, you’ve got to stand up.

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

Librarians aren't going to save us. Librarians aren't superheroes. They're just people trying to keep largely underfunded and overwhelmed public services going. Praise is nice; realistic expectations are better; material support is best.

The world is on fire, so I’m back over here.

I am always asking all of this.

The morning paper, January 5, 2024:

Spread this research far and wide! It addresses a question not enough people are asking in debates about school book bans: What do students gain when they're given the freedom to read? www.txftrp.org/new_research...

probably my most irrational belief is that when a yoga teacher says like, “breathe into your left hip” this is an instruction i can both understand and follow

In NYC! 🥳

Homeschooling my 7th grader while working and in school has been…rough. Here is a picture of a good day recently— reading/listening to The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Poe has been a huge win with him!
