Interested in ecological/environmental #stats? Join us at the EnvEcoStats conference at Lancaster Uni 1-3 July 2025 envecostats.wordpress.com 14 days left to submit an abstract - come on ecologists! @bes-quantitative.bsky.social @besmacro.bsky.social @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social #RStats

Great to spend the day at another IRTA centre today - Mas Badia - for a meeting of the Catalan working group on #soil carbon and seeing the current experiments on regenerative agriculture.

In the literature of domestication and microbiomes there seems to be the expectation that: domestication should lead to the loss of microbiome diversity and host-control. Alejandra Hernandez-Teran and I were both skeptical of both, so we decided to see what we know so far (1/6) shorturl.at/FHY9H

The first plants are growing happily in the greenhouse. So far we have cereals and legumes, but many more to come. First photosynthesis measurements later this week!

New publication: Domesticated #rice alters the #rhizosphere #microbiome, reducing #nitrogen fixation and increasing nitrous oxide emissions. #agroecology #sustainability #microbialecology doi.org/10.1038/s414...

If you want to see what we get up to at IRTA (Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology, in Catalunya) & the beautiful locations of the different centres, they've just published a series of short videos about some of the common methods we use...

Are you a postdoc interested in soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning? Have you applied for a MSCA in the 2023 or 2024 call and obtained a high (>85%) score? Josep Peñuelas and I are open to endorse applicants to these postdoc positions @creaf.cat creaf.factorialhr.com/job_posting/...

Great #postdoc opportunities for ecological research 🌳🐝🧪🦠🌍 @creaf.cat based near Barcelona in a vibrant and friendly research centre. 📣'ERC recruitment program' for people planning to apply for @erc.europa.eu Starting or Consolidator grants: creaf.factorialhr.com/job_posting/... [1/2]

No us imaginaríeu mai el que acabem de descobrir... Els bacteris i fongs del desert nord-africà han aparegut al Montseny!!!🦠✨ El viatge el fan sobretot amb la pols sahariana, però no només. Us expliquem aquesta història fascinant.

We will be hosting the 1st International Symposium on Volatile Interactions in Ecosystems in Copenhagen in May 2025. This symposium will bring together scientists working with #Biogeochemistry, #ChemicalEcology and #Ecosystem-atmosphereInteractions related to VOCs, volatile S and N. Welcome! 1/3

The first experiment of the WILD-ROOTS project is getting up and running 🥳 We'll be looking at how domestication affects the roots of 20 different crops - exudation, VOCs, rhizosphere and more!

Last few days to apply for this 4-year PhD contract at @creaf.cat (#Barcelona) about Spatial and temporal dynamics of biodiversity in Mediterranean spring ecosystems Apply here: creaf.factorialhr.com/job_posting/... Deadline 23rd February 2025. Please RT!

🧪Highly recommended if you're looking for an ecology PhD! Two very different topics on offer @creaf.cat (Barcelona) with @burriach.bsky.social For more info about his group check out @edmlab.bsky.social

New paper in @science.org ! Where and when did the #multiyear-droughts occur around the world? Have they become more prevailing? We identified over 10,000 such events and found that they have been increasingly occupying the terrestrial land. (1/6) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ado4245

Great to have these summaries in different languages (here in English, Castellano, and Català).

The WILD-ROOTS project is based at IRTA (Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology) in Cabrils (Catalonia, Spain) which was looking lovely in the winter sunshine today.

#PlantScience @cragenomica.bsky.social welcomes scientists interested in becoming Junior PIs through the Ramon y Cajal program (shorturl.at/UxXQb), If interested, get in touch first with our director Maria Lois , help us spread the word, please!

A view from Sant Miquel del Fai yesterday. First time visiting for me, and while it's not got as much water as it used to have, at least it wasn't completely dry!

📢Postdoc position open in WILD-ROOTS. Looking for a plant or soil ecologist with experience in omics analysis. Based at Cabrils, near Barcelona. borsatreball.irta.cat/enlace_ofert... Contact [email protected] for more details.

I wrote (ranted) on experimental design as I was frustrated as an editor at how little guidance students were getting. I underestimated the interest in the issue: it has been downloaded 10,000+ times! Clearly it’s something we need to be talking about more. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Have you wondered why fungi could have more resilience during environmental conditions? They can produce storage compounds which may help them to remain active! Thanks to all the team, esp. Alberto Canarini and Jörg Schnecker for conducting this experiment during challenging lockdowns!

📣Join our team! We looking for a root microbiome and phenotyping technician to join our Roots2Resilience root2res.eu team @teagasc Wexford. Mixture of lab and fieldwork.Further details and application here topjobs-teagasc.thehirelab.com/LiveJobs/Job.... Closing date 2nd Jan. 🥔🦠🌱

No. What happens in Doñana DOES NOT STAY in Doñana. After more than two years of work, we’ve published an article demonstrating that the poor condition of Doñana negatively affects waterbirds across the ENTIRE continent! Thread below! 🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Insert something poetic about the sun setting on my maternity leave as I go back to work this week...😉 My ERC Consolidator grant WILD-ROOTS is properly beginning! More info to come.

Great news! Two of my research projects got the funding. Two new openings (1 PhD and 1 Post doc) will be advertised in early 2025 and if you are interested in soil biogeochemistry and nutrient cycling in arid ecosystems, reach out. Please share! :)

It’s out!! We subjected soils from 30 different locations across Europe to extreme events and found that soil fungal and bacterial communities showed consistent responses that could be predicted from their origin! With @knightjar.bsky.social and many collaborators! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
