🎉 Historic win in Seattle! Stagehands at Showbox Market & Showbox SoDo just ratified their first union contract with IATSE Local 15 — becoming the first nightclub stage crew to unionize in the city's history! Better wages, benefits, and safety are on the way! ✊

As promised years ago and really prompted by me having a rant at my mom, I give you the BBotE Coffee Agronomy rant. With special guest star, @cascio.bsky.social's BANI model for prediction and modeling. www.funraniumlabs.com/2025/04/tari...

1. A major bill protecting trans people just passed in Washington. It makes insurers cover 12-month supplies of HRT which can be obtained at pharmacies, allowing trans people to stockpile medication to outlast supply disruptions. The latest from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Gentle reminder to go check all of your css-driven loading animations and ensure that the animated elements are fully removed from the DOM when hidden (display:none works too!). Safari in particular will just keep using up CPU while it animates your hidden svg in the background

We are thrilled to recognize @infrequently.org as this month's @speedcurve.com Performance Hero. Alex is honest, direct and extremely passionate in his fight for keeping the web platform alive and accessible for all. #perfhero www.speedcurve.com/blog/perform...

So excited to be opening for the hilarious @jamestomxo.bsky.social on May 9!

Behind the scenes of EVERY successful site is a crew of folks who care deeply about UX. Are you doing all you can to create a culture of #webperf and usability throughout your org? Not only will it lighten your load, it's also fun! www.speedcurve.com/web-performa... #ux #sitespeed #pagespeed

my husband just sent me this

Not everyone knows that a storm is coming. The weather today is GREAT & it’s fooling people into thinking this is the way the week will be. TALK to your neighbors. I just talked to three neighbors and they had no idea. Knock on some doors or wave at neighbors in yards and just give them a heads up

Day 82: another Lazy Sunday color comic -- written by special guest, my orange son

okay I'm doing a thread of folks in Gaza who need some help. I'm trying to get to everyone who asks but it's hard to keep track of all the requests, please reply HERE if you want to be included. if you have a bit of money to spare, sending it these folks' way will make you feel less helpless. 💜

US-based conferences should probably prepare to offer e.g. presentation and comms devices for on-site use by international travelers who are motivated enough to attend but who can't safely bring their devices across the border.

For over 40 years, Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program has helped southern sea otters bounce back—turning the tide for these critters! 🦦🌊 💙 Our pioneering surrogacy program pairs stranded pups with otter moms who teach them survival skills before they return to the wild.

I've written a one page patch for the new D&D Players Manual where I solve the problem of people's campaigns grinding to a halt because they can't schedule a game. PDF is the link. Print it out. Stick it in your manuals. May work for other games too. #ttrpg #dnd oldmenrunningtheworld.com?p=304

LOL wow a dude just argued in the EU courts that misgendering is a GDPR violation and he *won*. www.wearequeeraf.com/a-trans-refu...

A follow-up on this - a confirmed diagnosis today, of the Inattentive type. If I had not thought "that's just the way I am" for years and blamed myself for being a scatterbrain, maybe I would have looked into it earlier instead of at 41. For anyone who needs to hear that.

The unlawful detention of Mahmoud Khalil is one of the most extreme threats to free speech in 50 years. Trump is sending a message that people who speak out will be punished — but we have a message for him, too. We'll see you in court.

An organization that doesn't have spare capacity can't do the extra work to maintain the details and can't handle events when life tosses a curve ball or people get sick. Resiliency is more important than chasing razor thin efficiency in my opinion.

Feels a good day for a thread. So I would like to introduce you to a mostly forgotten, but actually rather pivotal figure in PC history. Meet Dr Portia Isaacson Bass. If it wasn't for something she did in 1981, we'd all still be forced to use IBM (or IBM-licensed) PCs right now. /1

Come work with me! We have two openings for Senior Staff/Group lead IC frontend engineers for two of the groups in my org. This is a phenomenal opportunity for someone with a proven leadership track record, and we’ll work closely together! block.xyz/careers/jobs... And block.xyz/careers/jobs...

this is an Orb that ponders, not the other way around. This Orb ponders only one thing. STABBING A FISHE

web performance work at scale is mostly 1-line code changes, pre-validated through weeks of auditing and experimentation

A heartbreakingly beautiful reminder of why communal, in-person experiences can be so important. In a comment on a snarky post about a sandwich. Once in a great while the Internet does what it's supposed to.

YOU PATENTED THE NEMESIS SYSTEM AND FOR WHAT? TO JUST KILL THE STUDIO THAT GAVE IT TO YOU AAAAAAAAAAA

Every time I fly, I always pick a window seat. I stare out of it and watch the world go by. We live in such a beautiful world. It’s big enough for all of us.

New in Chrome DevTools: Accurately emulate CPU performance of a low/mid tier phone with Automatic CPU throttling calibration! 📲 This feature calculates slow-downs for your specific device. Wanted this for years! We just shipped it.

Mapo tofu refried beans & Sichuan queso. This one came to me in a dream. Worked well with chips, would do well over rice. Did well with some sour cream & guacamole; would also take to some pickled onions or jalapenos readily.

Yay, Sergey! I met @sergeyche.dev way back at the start of my #webperf journey (2009 maybe?) and we immediately became friends. I was – and still am – awestruck by how much he does for our community out of the kindness of his heart and passion for user experience. www.speedcurve.com/blog/perform...

“What’s happening right now is *also* a labor story.” Yes, yes it is. https://ethanmarcotte.com/wrote/leaving-18f/

Here's a camera trapping tip. It's easier to count river otters if you have them line up single-file before they go through the video frame.

They hold hands while sleeping, carry their pups on their chests, and form rafts as they drift together on choppy waters. We love all the adorable ways sea otters rely on each other. 🦦 Like otters, love and community keep us afloat too. Share this post with the pawsome people who buoy your spirits!

Hey Gang! The incredible people at @distributeaid.org are putting together kits providing desperately needed supplies for trans people across the country. Me and 19 others have bundled some outstanding games together to raise money for this incredibly necessary project! itch.io/b/2889/hrt-h...

I wrote about a common conversation I’ve had with other Staff+ folks who are newly in an org lead role. I don’t think we talk enough about how difficult and isolating that transition can be! sylormiller.com/posts/2025/s...
