My feet are very happy I married a knitter. Because she knits me socks, which are cozy and warm.

Brilliant but devastating editorial in the Financial Times. “In the past 10 days, he [Trump] has all but incinerated 80 years of postwar American leadership. If you are not at the table, you are on the menu. America has turned.”

The heads of multiple federal agencies have told their employees not to respond to Musk’s email. Seems like Musk would’ve gotten approval for this draconian change in policy from Trump, with Cabinet officers informed in advance. But no, because this admin is in utter chaos.

👇How it started. Pls read it. "The spy chief wanted KGB staff abroad to recruit more Americans." www.politico.com/magazine/sto...

I wrote today about Trump's declining popularity, why it matters, and related points. Plus the week's links, with @profsaunders.bsky.social @dandrezner.bsky.social @donmoyn.bsky.social @danigilbert.bsky.social @himself.bsky.social @normornstein.bsky.social and many more.

That IS what someone with business acumen would do, but we’re dealing with Donald Trump here, so

I feel like if any of these government folks saw THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR, they would be a little more cautious about who they fired and why

Think of how low the bar is on top of that a reality TV actor at SecTran, a Russian asset at the CIA, an anti-vaxxer at HHS. This is the least qualified administration in the history of the Western world.

between Governors Hochul and Pritzker, you can imagine a dynamic developing where Democratic politicians compete over becoming the face of effective resistance to Trump. I think there are clear political upsides to winning that race and am mostly surprised that there have been so few runners so far

Can we also keep in mind that while Zelenskyy like Churchill 1940-45 postponed elections, Trump in peacetime tried to overturn by violence an election he lost - and has since pardoned all the co-conspirators in his attempted coup?

President Reagan's strategy on the Cold War: "We win, they lose.” President Trump's strategy today: The dictators win, we lose.

Reagan associate counsel: Congress has not authorized this radical overhaul, and the protocols of the Constitution do not permit statutorily mandated agencies and programs to be transformed—or reorganized out of existence—without congressional authorization. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Just looking at the events of *this one day* compels the conclusion that the United States Government is being run by morons, psychos, invertebrates, and crooks.

This is a person who will be able to live the rest of their lives, proud that when the moment came and they were tested, they did the morally correct thing. THIS is the kind of thing that should make parents forever proud of the person they raised.

Now ask faculty.

Justice Dept lawyers are showing other public servants, members of Congress and the public - not to mention quivering media moguls - what it means to be a citizen of a democracy. You do not bend the knee nor kiss the ring of tyrants.

Hey who knew that an inexperienced substance abusing sex predator might make an unreliable national representative.

Guys, Trump's offer to Putin is not a terrible deal *if he's on Putin's side*. That really does feel like the key thing to recognise.

Happy Friday! ♥️

It's getting tiring to keep saying this, but for posterity's sake I will: any previous administration would have been instantly sunk by this. Before January 20, 2017, this would have been the most stunning corruption scandal in the history of the American justice system. Now, it's...a Thursday.

For Vichy/Quisling Repubs in House + Sen, no humiliation is too deep, if threat is losing the job See: L Graham, S Collins, J Ernst, etc I've been fired. Most people have been fired. Losing a job is NOT THAT BAD. Especially for people who'll still be rich www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/n... Contrast:

Not that anyone cares but a bunch of senior doj officials resigning over a corrupt instruction to drop a case was what triggered the Nixon impeachment, and in the Trump era it's just the 2pm scandal of a random Thursday and every day now has ~3 such scandals that would have ended any prior admin

if you see this, post a photo from your device with no explanation.

I know this is a tired, cliched gripe these days, but if Biden had said something as remotely dumbass there would've been days upon days of stories about how he's too old and feeble to be in office.

"The core issue is that Musk and Trump are acting *as if* they hold absolute power, even though they do not," says @chrislhayes.bsky.social. "They are, in that sense, bluffing. But it's a bluff they want to turn into a new reality, one that destroys the American constitutional order."

"This isn't the way you talk if you’re just a liar. You don’t threaten and needlessly infuriate your neighbors and allies. You don’t bet your country’s economy on trade wars. You don’t double down on ethnic-cleansing fantasies." This is how you talk if...

Amidst the chaos and the law-breaking the most important thing to remember/focus on is that they are doing these things illegally because they know they don't have the votes to do it by passing laws, even in a GOP controlled Congress.
