East Germany is dying, literally, with depopulation, extremely low fertility & an elderly scared remnant of former Communist citizens (anyone over 45 grew up in GDR). Luckily there's not enough of them to get the fascists into government. Berlin (& Leipzig?) are younger & less reactionary

In case you were wondering, the 2-year running mean for the global surface temperature anomaly is currently at 1.57°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline.

HHS told that they don't have to respond to Musk's "what did you do last week" email For those that do respond, they offer the following advice: "Assume what you write will be read by malign foreign actors and tailor your response accordingly."

7 years of wretched Scholz as VC or Chancellor through COVID economy & Russia ends @16% ”SPD below 20% for the first time since 1933, worst result since 1887, in Empire. As a result, SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil was announced as the new leader" to negotiate with Merz en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Ge...

New in PN: Despite the hype, DOGE hasn't found a shred of fraud "With nothing to show for its efforts to find actual fraud, it has become clear that DOGE is the enforcement arm of a Trump administration that has no interest in working with Congress to implement its policy priorities."

Trump is SHUTTING DOWN all 8000 EV chargers at federal facilities These EV chargers were already bought, paid for with our tax dollars, installed, and operational THIS is what real government waste looks like And what does Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, think of this?

Anyone remotely surprised by the US vote in the UN regarding Ukraine today needs to read this. This is what's going on. america2.news/donald-trump...

Mesmerising low flying balloons over St Kilda

Keir Starmer's #UK Labour government is utterly pathetic. As signalled at the Paris summit, instead of aligning with the #EU on #AI, they are waiting to see what the techno-Nazis in the #USA do. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Wow. "The former leader of Reform UK in Wales has appeared in court accused of accepting bribes in exchange for making statements in the European Parliament that would benefit Russia, a court has heard."

They say only Nixon could go to China. So perhaps only the conservative Atlanticist Friedrich Merz could lead the European charge for independence from America. My post-election article on whether the new German chancellor could be Europe's unlikely saviour:

"What is political in fact is people that deny science and deny basic economics in their policies, that's what political looks like. And that is what Ted O'Brien is doing," Mr Kean told the ABC's Afternoon Briefing. Murdoch minions are climate deniers, James M contends www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Someone once described him as a canned ham covered in Vaseline and I’ve never unseen it. But seriously this guy is a psychopath who should be nowhere near a position of power

"The Telegram development team is based in Dubai. The Telegram team had to leave Russia due to local IT regulations and has tried a number of locations as its base, including Berlin, London and Singapore. ... we are ready to relocate again if local regulations change."

Dan Bongino sued the Daily Beast for $15 million for reporting the NRA fired him for being "unfit for his duties" and not only did he lose but he was found liable for the Beast legal fees and had to pay THEM $40,000

Scary that Channel 9 is repeating GRT racism, but you cannot vote in Australian federal elections until you have received citizenship & you cannot apply until you have been here 4 years. So no one arriving since the start of COVID lockdown will be able to vote in the election, that's 5 years ago

“In some ways that’s even more chilling than firing the four stars,” Rosa Brooks, a professor at Georgetown Law. “It’s what you do when you’re planning to break the law: you get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down.” By NYT Greg Jaffe www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

Now pretty sure 80 points will be enough for #LFC, 19 more in 12 games. Our lowest since 2018! Arsenal would do very well to get 27 points in their last dozen with no forwards, or even finish 2nd

An Opus Dei priest converted me to Catholicism two weeks ago. Here's who I think the next Pope should be.

If true then the US is now a genuine Russia-style mafia state. Russia extorts with energy-, the US with tech-dependence. I trust the conclusions we draw from this will also turn into a semblance of policy.

No matter how preposterous, the Times headlines nearly every Trump story as if it were written by the White House comms team.

Gift link. A small unelected, secretive crew now has free access to sensitive private data of everyone. And Musk is already publicly targeting family members of judges who rule against the administration. If this isn’t ringing alarm bells, I don’t know what would. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

Why is the Trump administration encouraging foreign interference in US politics?

Jordan Bardella, the president of France’s hard right National Rally, has cancelled his plans to speak at CPAC after Steve Bannon “proactively made a gesture referring to Nazi ideology.” In other words, Bannon and CPAC are now too extreme for the French extreme right.

'Spandau Ballet is like being jostled by handsome plumbers shouting Marvin Gaye songs. Marc Almond is like perching on a stool in a basement bar while a skinny, unsettling man sings Jacques Brel-style torch ballads. Both good with good hair. But contrasting vibes' www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Couldn't happen to a more unpleasant fellow traveller, but wider implications are very worrying for free thought in academia

We have a toxic masculinity problem, or rather a bullying racist problem

"In the meantime we will continue to keep you informed at the earliest opportunity of both the challenges we face and the steps we continue to take as we move the club forward and work towards Project 150 [21st title in 2028, 150th anniversary]." Oh fuck, what a grift. J6 terrorists sue a DOJ controlled by Trump; Trump orders DOJ lawyers to settle for an undisclosed amount, both sides agree to an NDA. This can happen dozens, hundreds of times. Just an ingenious way to funnel tax dollars to far-right terrorist groups.
